Husqvarna 1900 anyone?

I picked this up from Simpson LTD last week after doing a lot of research. There's a lot of information on the gunboards forum, but I don't see it discussed much anywhere else. I had the want for a 6.5x55mm just to get into something well balanced with a little European style. I don't know these existed until about a month ago. I was well familiar with the 1640, which is basically an improved small ring Mauser. Evidently the 1900 that followed was supposed to be a cost cutting measure as it went to the Sako style extractor and plunger ejector. What they wound up making was a very trim, very simple, and very slick running action. The rifle itself is modest asthetically and proportionally. It's no mountain rifle, but it's balance and pointing is almost perfect. It hangs very well when aiming offhand. It's accuracy so far has been more than adequate, even a bit surprising for a 60 year old rifle. I look forward to hand loading eventually, and having a better fit for scope to go with it. The 2-7 Leupold is all I could spare at the time. My only other dilemma is choosing wether to leave it as is or to clean up the stock imperfections and add a butt pad. Not for recoil reduction, but to keep it from wanting to slide around when stood up on smooth surfaces when in the stand. A pad would be minimally offensive from a modification point of view. But erasing an unknown number of moose hunts in the hands of an unknown Swede feels like it would be hard to do. It does have a certain amount of charm to it.

That is a nice rifle. If mine, I would clean the stock and do 3-5 coats of hand rubbed boiled linseed oil on it. Rub long and rub hard. The 6.5X55mm Mauser is a good caliber to play with. I am currently putting a 6.5X55mm McGowan barren on a Savage 110 action. Should be a lot of fun.

I've been putting oil on it. What I debate doing is steaming out the impressions and basically making it look new again. The metal (other than the bottom metal) is in almost perfect condition.

Beautiful example of a 1900. I’ve had a few 1640 Huskys, one of my favorite vintage offerings. Clean ones are getting harder and harder to find whether it’s a 1900, 1640 or whatever. To me, the fact that it’s a 6.5x55 adds to the rifle’s charm, it’s a sentimental favorite of mine and often underestimated. It would be fun to know how much game has been taken by that chambering.

Neat rifle, thanks for sharing!

That is a magnificent looking rifle just as it is. I wouldn't do anything to it except appreciate and enjoy it.

I feel like at the very least putting something like a 1/2" presentation pad on it, just so it doesn't slide away on me if I lean it on something.

I bought 3 boxes of Norma 156 grain RN to start, mainly because it was actually one of the cheaper offerings I found but also to see if I could flatten a couple deer with those pencil length round noses. Recoil is mostly negligible, but got me thinking how rowdy it would be in 30-06 or 9.3x62mm. Imagine 286 grain bullets out of a 7-1/2 lb rifle with a plastic butt plate.

Try Prvi Partizan 139gr cheap and accurate! When you decide to cut it loose for something more modern remember me! Nice rifle.

You must know me better than I thought. Hopefully it'll be awhile, I'm trying to get better!

Also, if I remember right that PPU 139 was a little pedestrian for it's bullet weight. The Norma was the next step up in price, it was like $30/box at Natchez

OP, Bed the action, freefloat the barrel, tweak the trigger, add a recoil pad. In other words, make it a real shooter, not a safe queen, IF you want to hunt with it. If you bought it to resell, that is another issue.

Lapua brass is available at a very reasonable price, so is Forster dies.

That is Moose ammunition you purchased.

After I get a couple deer to it's credit, I'll break it down and show the innards. It's really a well designed action compared to it's contemporaries.

Always amazes me how many guys pass on some fine vintage/older rifles in favor of some of the modern rifles that are the new rack. That being said, there’s a lot of us who appreciate rifles out of that era, certainly many here in this forum do.

Unfortunately, it seems the explanation for it being here is a little more tragic. As I understand it, European gun laws being what they are; limits on ownership and relicensing procedures inevitably wind up causing a lot of these old guns to get surrendered. When Grandpa dies, you don't automatically get his guns unless you jump through the hoops. The younger generation decides it's not worth it, or isn't even interested so his guns get sold to a wholesaler/exporter and shipped here. These guns weren't meant for the American market unless it's a later Smith and Wesson or FFV marked receiver. It could very well mean that one more Scandanavian family decided that hunting is no longer a priority, or even desirable.

A sad truth, there and unfortunately here. When I was putting myself through college I worked at local gunshop, a nice shop I might add. They bought used guns like many do. One day a young man driving his grandpa’s LTD drove into the parking lot, came inside and asked if we bought used guns. We told him yes and then followed him to his car where he opened the trunk. Laying inside were several firearms, a couple pre 64 rifles, several Drilling rifles (some beauties I might add) and a model 12 20 gauge. He said he had inherited them but didn’t want them around the house. We verified his story and ended paying him 5 cents on the dollar what they were worth. He drove off happy but I’m sure his grandpa wasn’t. Unfortunately that attitude is pretty common, here, there and everywhere.

I was fortunate to see and grab a fine Husky that you posted for sale. I love the older guns with history, and it’s a fine example! A little load testing proved it to be a shooter!
The sad reality is that I have no children to pass my guns to so I keep my eye out for good young men that deserve a good gun and make them a gift. Before this one goes anywhere, I’ll give you a call to see if you want it back.
