Hunting with 35 cal?

Terry, You can't go wrong with the 35's.
I have taken deer , elk and buffalo with the them, a 35 Whelen and a 35 Brow Whelen.
Use a 250gr. bullet at 2500 to 2600 fps and they are good to go.

I have 35 WhelenAI it's one of my elk rifles and I had it long throated for the 225gr AB/225gr Barnes and it's build on Rem action with Kreiger barrel. I don't have experience with other 35 cal rifles, I'd shot the above rifle as 35 Whelen before I had new barrel put on but of the two I like the Ackley. I've had best luck with R-17 also IMR-4064.

I have an older Rem classic in 35 Whelen, it is one of the most accurate guns I own, it loves RL 15 and Varget under a 200-250 gr bullet. It pounds game good, I have shot a few WT deer with it and it puts two holes in them, and doesn't leave a lot of blood shot meat. I haven't shot anything else with it yet.

I have a remington 760 that was a 35 remington that I had rechambered to .358 winchester I hunt with it quite a bit with 200-225gr bullets. It seems to kill deer pretty dead. I try to keep shots under 200yds. One of my employees used it to kill an 800lb moose one year when they drew a tag. I load it with near Max listed loads for those bullets and I can get it to shoot about 1.5moa at 100yds even with the sucky trigger and low power scope.

a long time friend has taken more game than I can count with a Win 71 in 348 (35cal) he never had to track very far.

35 is a great cal.

I had a Winchester Custom Shop 358 STA which was built in 2000 . Using a Swift A-Frame 250gr under 90 grs of H4350 got me 3060fps for +/- 5300 ft lbs. The only bull elk taken was running at about 125 yards, at the shot he did a complete 360* summersalt and laid motionless is a cloud of dust.

As I was telling myself that is the greatest shot you have ever made, a HUGE 7x7 walked out about 75 yards below me and stood in the open and then slowly walked into the timber across the ravine. I'm still sick to my stomach....

HI,
I have a 358 win built on a Parker Hale 98 with a Shillen SS Barrel.
I mainly shoot pigs and large billy goats, a bit of over gun for the goats, but perfect for the boar pigs. ;)

These are loads I have developed and all put 3 shot groups under MOA.
Great calibre and easy on the recoil.
My Powders are Australian Rifle your equivalent is in your Hogden Powders.

I hear that since MS changed primitive hunting season from front stuffers to anything single shot and 35 Cal or bigger (I think the single shot is right) there has been a huge surge in 35 Whelen popularity.

Terry, XTR -

Howdy !

I've seen that H & R has made special runs of .35Rem single shots ( SB2 I imagine ).

These have plastic camo stocks, and also come w/ a .444 barrel ( again, I've heard ).

There are often some of these for sale, in select Southern State Pawn/Gun stores.

With regards,
357Mag

I opt for the 350 Rem Mag 25+yrs ago,as it fits in a Seven/XP-100R/short action.

For packing &/or a AK/Yukon moose/black bear thumper an XP-100R w/ Leupold 2.5-8XEER scope chambered in 350RM.

For distances over 400yds the 338 bores carry energy & are superior in the BC dept.

My first hunting rifle was a Remingtom Mod.8 made in 1909 or so. It was a 35 REM.

I shot my first buck with it. They are California game getters, here where most shots are 50 yd or less and it may be brushy.

Light recoil, but good kill characteristics. Don't under-estimate them!

I love the 35 Whelen Improved. I am shooting the Barnes 200 TSX at 3125 fps with a full load of RL15. It kills elk like they've been hit by lightening. Great cartridge.

You guys are killing me as I always wanted a 35 whelen just because. Always been a fan of the colonel townsend whelan! When remington chambered for it I couldnt find one.Always wished for one but alas now I dont have the cash to get one.It is a hard hitting gentlemans magnum.

Has anyone made .358 Hoosier brass by necking up 6.5 X 47 Lapua Brass?

It's only .050 to long.
