Hunting/Target rifle build.

Hi, intend to build a switch barrel rifle for hunting and target shooting. Caliber of choice is 308. Now, I have two actions that I can build on: Remington 700s and Tikka T3. I am not concern about the short hunting barrel but am concerned as to how long and heavy a barrel I can hang over the above mentioned actions? Standard Palma profile is my choice and barrel length as long as possible, upto 32". Would any of the action mentioned above be able to take the weight. Both are repeaters. Thanks for advising.

32" is a bit over kill for a hunting rifle. Unless its a bean field, drive to the stand and walk up into it and set the rifle up and wait. But that not the point here.

If it was me i would go with the Tikka
-good factory trigger
-70° bolt lift
- smooth cycling action (i had my hands on one once)

I wouldn't go longer than 30" unless your sling shooting.

Its a help to the audience to know the caliber your using. Some really dont benefit from longer barrels.

Here is my Remage set up I find it almost looks factory, I have 3 long actions and 3 short actions and all have 3 barrels each that are rotated. I have it down to 5 min to swap a barrel at home and 10 min at the range, that's headspaced and ready to shoot. this one is a 32" plus a brake and I never heard it complain.

With all due respect, I don't think there is any such thing as a good hunting/target combo rifle. Such a thing would only be less than ideal for either purpose...IMHO. Then again, you may be happy with a hunting rifle that handles like a brick and shoots well enough to finish last at a good match. To each their own...I'm not saying that you can't build a respectably good shooting rifle that will suit your needs..only that if you want it to be the best it can be at something, it should be built to be the best at that something. Anything else is not a combination gun, but a compromise gun. Now, if you're happy with 1/2 moa...that's very doable with just about anything. When someone says "target gun", I assume they want to beat someone else that has a real "target gun."
