Hunting in South Florida?

Hi

So I've got the itch to be back out hunting. I got used to all-year-round (and free) access to deer stalking while living in the UK, but given I'm now based in Miami that involves a lengthy flight. A trip home to NZ is even longer. South Florida seems to mostly be about 'hog' hunting. Anyone got any good recommendations regarding outfitters/places? I can search via Google but it's hard to determine whether they're just canned operations or not. I'm sure some are better than others so any input would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Steve

You could try Iguana hunting with air rifles or Python hunting in the Everglades. I’ve been wanting to do both of those....

I paid for a hunt a few years ago in central Florida that turned out to be hunting inside a big pen. It wasn’t exactly my idea of fun, but the sausage was good.

I lived in Pensacola a few years; it was cool enough a few weeks to stimulate enough interest to hunt. Ticks, snakes, etc were major distractions. Personally I would take vacation to go elsewhere for more suitable conditions, but everyone has their own ideas.

That, I guess, is my fear. Even though I lived in central London I could jump in the car and within an hour and a half be in tree stand after fallow, roe or the tasty muntjac. Here in Miami good hunting feels like a trip to another state or country.

Brady ranch is in Indiantown Florida and has a huge population of Sitka deer and hog hunts also. My friend guides at JR outfitters sometimes and they do hogs, quail, and some exotics. Jr is close to Indiantown also. I am sure both of them would let you come visit prior to a trip to see if it is your cup of tea. I have always wanted to hunt the Lightsee's place on Brahma Island. Braham island is an island in Lake Kissimmee and they take you over on a barge and you camp in the bunk house. They have hogs and in the past have had a bunch of different exotics, Disney filmed a large portion of their documentary on eagles on Brahma Island and when the New York City zoo was being renovated years ago they keep at lot of animals there. Some were aging and not considered worth moving a were hunted by hunters for a fee to help the zoo. I don't know of anyone that has hunted Lightsee's and been unhappy. A friend used to go and help cook as he knew the owners, he loved going just to help cook.
