Hunting and Shooting after Hip Replacements

I'm 61 and I find I'm getting both hips replaced this winter. It's bone on bone both sides, so I'm more than ready. For those that have had this, how did it affect your hunting and shooting? Could you get back to a cross-legged sitting position in service rifle or small-bore? Any advice on recovery or conditioning?

i had total hip replacement last august was up & walking with help up& down the halls in 2 days 2 months. later was back to walking 2mi. am now back to walking 5 mi. daily also have defiberlator& pacemaker replaced last feb. . 2nd. one of those so if you want to a few days of drug assisted pain is not bad i suffered & dreaded having mine done for 3 yrs. before having it done would recommend it highly but the arthur is another thing ive not got any cure for it youll probably have some small limitations but you will be able to shoot& hunt just might have to go some slower hope everything goes well ammazing what surgeons can do with their guidance from the lord regards shooter63

I had my left replaced in 2008 . Does not affect my hunting , but don't carry alot of weight as it will wear out faster. My father started with hips at 62 and by 93 has had both sides replaced twice . Listen to your Doc.
I found shooting F class is great.

My brother had both done at 44 and he is doing very good. Still works hard and plays hard. But he has slowed, some hell who hasn't?
He did need his pills for a time and we had to take care of him they did one at a time.

I'm 73 had my knee done 2 years ago what a relief.Operation done on Monday shot the match on Saturday not a good idea.6 weeks later the pain was gone.Ever day after it got better.Three months after having it done i was walking3/4 mile to where I turkey hunt climbing two fences each way. This year only thing i don't do is climb trees. Good Sooting Larry

Before you commit to the surgery have a conversation with the orthapedic surgon you will have do the operation about your concerns. I am fairly certain he will not recomend shooting in the cross leg position as this will greatly increase the chance of a dislocation of one or both hips. Switching to the crossing of the legs at the anckles may be a position you can go to, however. As a surgical nurse I have seen hundreds of these surgeries and almost every patient has reported tremendous improvment in pain and ability to tolerate walking once they have completed rehab. Shooting prone or standing should not be a problem, but getting into the prone position will take more time. Best of luck and Merry Christmas.
