Hunting Ammo Shortages -- Lobster for Ammo

Tomorrow Maine's rifle season for deer opens. There is such a shortage for "hunting ammo" in common calibers 308,270,30/06, 30-30, that several of my relatives have offered me 10 lbs of lobster per box of loaded ammo so they can take their kid hunting. Living in the heart of Lobster country has its perks. And having 3 sons that fish for them is even better.
"Clarification: I do not load for others" however my sons and I load together in my shop.
What I saw during bear and moose season was guys missing/wounding a high percentage of animals more so then in the past. I believe its because many don't have a decent supply to practice with prior to their hunt.
Another thing I noticed was guys using varmint ammo for bear and moose. I knew several guys that were taking their kid moose hunting. I asked what they had for ammo. Several said "I just bought whatever I saw on the shelf for the last two years"

Hmm. If these people are anything like my FIL; they bought a box a year for the last fifteen years while only shooting 3-4 rounds a year. Worried last year about not finding ammo so we searched thru his hunting stuff. "Shit, you got enough ammo for the rest of your life at the rate you shoot"

Most people I used to see at the public range were horrible shots. They would struggle to put 3 in a 10" circle. I doubt another 5 or 10 shots of practice would make any difference in their abilities. Maybe having a short supply of ammo might make someone less likely to take a follow up shot, but even then its only another shot or two.

They are not your responsibility, let them solve the problem themselves or stay home instead of hunting.

There is plenty of name brand ammunition available online. Simply tell them to order some and get on with their hunting. The common cartridges are readily available.
Yes, it’s hard to believe that someone would not keep some ammo on hand for a rifle they own. Probably the same ones that drive to McDonald’s when they realize it’s time to put some food in their stomach!

What I am seeing is many dont touch their rifles at all during the off season so they have no idea the ammo shortage is as bad as it is. I have had more then one guy show me their rifle complaining they cant see through the scope. I pick up the rifle and point to the layer of thick dust on the muzzle end of the optic. The rifles many times sit in a corner never moved in a year.

Sounds more like participants instead of hunters. Most participants should stay home for their and their friends safety.

Years past what I have noted when the “orange army” gets geared up.
They come to the range geared up for the yearly “test fire”.
First order of business is to set up the 4x4 sheet of cardboard at 100.
Rolled up old dog bed and spare insulated bibs for front an rear rest.
The white plastic bag or bags of new ammo is proudly displayed in a neat pile.
Old’ Betsey is brought out and arranged on the “bags”.
Usually a box, but at times a sock with a knot in it because there is a hole in the toe, with odds and ends of “fouling” ammo is brought out and sorted. This ammo is more times than not questionable to put into service for hunting, but plenty good for “sight’n in”. The “ammo” has come from various places and well meaning individuals. Neighbor down the street got a new truck, partial box of ammo in the glove box, AND he found enough on the dash, ashtray and floor board to make a full box! Along with that there are a few that he found in the bed when he was cleaning it out, he just fishes and doesn’t hunt.
Another neighbor had some ammo from great uncle and grandpa, along with some he found in an old house.

He looks at ole’ betsey, action is closed, action is pointing down range. He opens the bolt and extracts the empty, uncle joe bob gave home that tip on how to store it in the off season.

We are now about ready to shoot. A quick look in the scope and we notice various debris and dust. A little spittle and shirt tail is the remedy.

We start off with the ammo from the bed of the truck. Ya want to shoot this first in case it cause a jam or refuses to exit the muzzle. Darn sure don’t want to shoot it last and have wasted all the fresh ammo in front of it and end up with a stuck bolt or projectile.

All goes well, even though the blue green brass split it still went off. We now proceed to try and shoot up the rest of this “fouling” ammo. We adjust the scope with the partial box with the best looking ammo. I will be darned it shot ten rounds into a palm sized group, almost Sniper quality!

We now open our brand new “fresh” ammo. Three rounds are fired. Now this group is no where near the last AND it is bigger than a pizza pan. Shoot three more, maybe the group will shrink, nope shoot four more still not good.
Must be ammo, we try another brand, similar results.
We retrieve the empty box of gifted ammo that shot the Sniper group. Tear the end flap off the box for the lot number. Will google it and see if we can find more on line.

Last round fired, the empty case is left in ole betsys chamber as always.
Fresh new ammo is dumped loose into the sock, fouling ammo as it didn’t group for crap. Box is placed in trash.
Bench bags are placed in truck, old Spot wags his tail as he sniffs his bed in the back seat.

All ready to go home and another fellow shows up. Discussion ensues, how’d ya shoot blah blah. Maybe your barrel is fouled, nope, cleaned it a while back. Pretty sure barrel is “shot out” have had this rifle since I was 18 and I am 30 now, hunted with it every year!

Yeah gents it’s a bunch’a BS. I will sadly admit I have seen, heard or witnessed all of the above at some time or another AND pretty sure I left something out.

My wife's co=worker had her ask if I had 5 rounds of 30-30. I gave him the 2 I had left.
A guy left his rifle at the range the other day. I figured he'd used all his ammo sighting in & said to hell with it & left it there!lol

That seems to be a very accurate description of what goes on in this area as well. Except we have gravel pits where people go for their sighting/shooting.
We have all herd " 30/06 ammo is 30/06 ammo". I do try to explain the difference between 150gr factory vs 180gr factory but many times its a pointless conversation.

It sort of begs the question is who or whom is buying up all the ammo. The same thing happened under Obama and now under his right hand man its gone way beyond the shortages of the past.
