Hunter Safety Class

I am a huge proponent of both hunter safety and firearms safety programs. In my opinion, they are essential for the survival of the shooting sports.

Thank you for your contribution.

Spent a number of years working with the 4H Shooting Sports programs, very rewarding and beneficial to the continuance of the sport we love .

Time is one of the more valuable resources we can share with others.

I am a NYS certified instructor for the Hunter Safety Program, Bowhunter Safety Program and Safe Boating Program. I would deck the entire classroom out with trophy mounts, camo clothing, blaze orange gear and various hunting equipment. Kids always got excited as soon as they entered the room. Moms and dads were always encouraged to stay with their kids.

I taught for 39 years before I finally passed the torch to some younger guys.

I took hunter safety over 20 years ago. Good to see kids today doing something other than playing on IPADs or video games.

I took the Hunter Education class 53 years ago, then sat through it again with my girlfriend's son about 25 years ago. Before taking the young man to the course, I joked with him about the "crusty old guy" that scared the kids into safe practices - and did a pretty good job of it. We arrived - and it was the same guy giving the class. Good old "Red". It was like going back in time, for sure. I really appreciated all the classes that man must have put on in all those years.

I want to say there was between 20 and 30 kids in her class. Refreshing to see, for sure.

Close to DFW, man/hunter killed removing long gun from vehicle. FA must have been loaded. One lesson I try to keep in mind is to stay away from the business end of a FA, and the damn FA should not have been in a HOT condition! RIP. 2nd and 3rd lesson is check safety/FA issues yourself. Someone else may have put the FA in the car in an unsafe condition. We often forget how dangerous FAs are!!

In addition, a fellow recently was killed when his dog was jumping around and caused a FA to discharge, killing the individual. About 500 different ways to get killed by a FA.

Grandaddy rule of all is keep muzzle pointed in SAFE direction.
First rule is keep muzzle pointed in safe direction. 2nd Rule is don't forget the first rule.
