hunt gone bad

Why would someone post that video for the public? A cat was wounded and left overnight, only to be shot at many more times before it gets close enough to bite someone and then be shot at point blank range. Then they come on camera and make excuses and explain 10% of hunts end like that? Not doing hunters any favors IMHO. Won't buy a Cannon safe now.

Leopard is dangerous game hunting. I've never hunted leopard, but it looks to me like they did what they were supposed to do.

The cat was wounded at night. They elected to not follow up at night - which seems prudent. Why go in at night after a freshly wounded leopard? Yes, it would have been better had the cat died right there, when shot the first time - that doesn't always happen in hunting and this isn't a whitetail deer we're seeing. Letting it lay up overnight, they just might get lucky and find a dead leopard in the morning.

So, the next day, they get their guns and go in as a team. They know it's likely the leopard will charge if it can. It does, and they shoot it, or shoot at it, several times, eventually killing it. One guy is mauled, but not bad compared to some leopard attacks.

What's the problem?

It's called dangerous game hunting for a reason. Time to time the dangerous game wins. Buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, even hippo in the right circumstances... At least according to the reading I've done and the hunters with whom I've talked.

I've hunted cougar and bear - which at least have the potential of being dangerous - and I'd love to hunt leopard. Mostly because it's got a chance to turn the tables. This is no whitetail, it's a fast, mean, effective predator known to go after men, provoked or not. Wounded or not. I for one am glad there are still opportunities to hunt dangerous game, and men still willing to do so.

Regards, Guy

In the statement of 10%, they are saying 10% fall dead at the base of the tree and the rest are "runners". They do not state how far the runners run or how many survive till morning. I have seen this extended video on dangerous game on cable and the PH was very lucky it was not worse. Getting the window of opportunity to take that last fatal shot and not shooting the PH before he is ripped to shreds probably doesn't happen that often during an attack. I have to hand it to the PH's, they put themselves in very dangerous situations for their clients.

I'm going to Africa next May. I understand about hunting and dangerous game. I have been charged by a black bear sow with cubs on more than one occasion, twice in the dark. A black bear is no leopard, but the end result may be the same. Leaving an animal overnight is smart. No problem. The PH's did their job and killed the cat before it could harm innocent people.

There are times when a hunt doesn't work the way we want it too. My first sentence in my post questioned why you would allow the public to view it. Bad publicity is doing great harm to the hunting industry. Film it if you want, mistakes and all. Show it to your friends. But don't promote it as entertainment if it might hurt the sport.

When I first read your post I had mixed feelings about it. My first thoughts were screw the animal rights and anti gun people! If they don't like it don't watch it. Hit the stop button or change the channel on the tube! My next thoughts were well you are right. The animal rights people could and probably would use this against hunters!

My first thoughts are because I understand why I wouldn't chase after a wounded leopard in the dark. Their eyes pick up the slightest movement as well their eyes are built for seeing at night! leopards are also masters at camouflage and are ambush predators. The reason for knowing a little about your game when hunting them. I guess the animal rights ppl don't have enough common sence to think like that! Also if they or one of their kids got attacked by a wild animal they would most likely be the first ones to scream for the authorities to wipe them out! Not preserve them! Witch is what responsible hunters do! Just look at what hunters have done for the Elk, Turkey, deer, and many many other wildlife foundations that hunters have created!

Well the video reminded me to never walk up to my game unless I am absolutely sure it's safe!

I pig hunt a lot and you can get over confident!

Dennis, You are defenitly right on with pigs! I have a friend that I hog hunt with. I shoot them from a box blind or from a safe distance with my rifle. He runs them with dogs, and when the dogs hemm the hog up he goes in 1 on 1 with the hog with nothing but a 8" bowie knife! He is 6' 4" 210lbs and I have seen him struggle with a 80lb pig! My Hat is off to him tho! Got bigger go-nads than me! Pigs are fast as lightning and very agile!

you would think the people in the video could learn to shoot better than they did. I feel sorry for the PHs that have to hunt with city slickers. I am meaning the ones who only hunt once a year and that just because they need to show up there rich buddy. All they are doing is putting peoples live in danger.
