HS precision paint

Has anyone ever painted a stock to turn out like the HS precisions, dull basecoat with the webbing?

I'm not trying to boot leg one, just really like the feel, toughness and functionality of the coating for hunting. I've got a couple of old 40x stocks that I have worked on and would like to put that finish on them.

I'm certainly not sure what coating it is , but it has to be an epoxy finish of some sort. Take a look at the Dura Coat finishes. The amount of hardener will dictate the gloss to the finish. I haven't used it personally on stocks but I know that it is used. Their web site has a bunch of colors available. It is a tough finish.

If I am not mistaken HS Precisions paint is proprietary to them, and its formula is made for them only. I too wanted the same kind of paint and called them, and that was what the guy told me.

Proprietary, well crap my britches.

I'll take a look at the duracoat stuff.

I used to do a similar finish many years ago using polane -t.

For the webbing I used a conventional siphon spray gun with un-thinned polane with the pressure turned down until it was spattering. You'll have to experiment with the pressure and how far back to hold the gun.

I've read that duracoat is very similar to Polane T but it comes much thinner. I tried to replicate the webbed finish using duracoat a few weeks without any succsess. I really like that finish and would also love to hear if anyone has a method that works with duracoat.

The webbing is kind of a bonus if I could get that to work, really just looking for that tough dull finish they have as the base layer.

The Dura Coat is tough. Splatter coat is hard to duplicate without 1st hand knowledge of how it's done initially. The only time that I was able to duplicate it was with laquer and thinning about 1/2 enough. There are commercial paint coaters that do splatter coat so it might even involve special guns. Dunno.

Try Krylon Krinkle or the Granite style (I've used both but prefer the Granite). Lightly sand for the desired roughness/smoothness followed by a clear matte overcoat.

I've used the Krinkle & it looks OK but I really didn't care that much for it. It does look different though, not in a bad way but just not my preference.

That's the way I thought also and why I prefer the Granite. Though I have a couple Friends that really like the Krinkle, to each his own I guess. The spray can covers do give a fair representation of the finish though.

You may want to DYI, but i have a friend who has had HS paint several of his Bell & Carlson stocks. I guess they will do any stock. I think it is around $115 maybe?

I recently called HS to inquire about removing paint from a stock I aquired that was spray painted. The fella on the phone stated all they're stock are painted and then gone over with the rubbery type clear coat.

He recomended for me to just sand it if I didnt like it and paint it a new color.
