Howa 1500 223 -

Hi all,
Couldn’t see if this has been asked before.

I have a Howa 1500SA 223 24” varmint in a standard Hogues stock.
I am new to reloading and about to purchase my first projectiles to start. My question is if the 75g Hornady ELD Match will fit into Hogues internal Box mag. I have looked at the Hornady load data which indicated a COL of 2.390. I’ve attempted to measure the internal mag but can’t get a definitive reading.

Has anyone successfully loaded the 75g to fit in the mag or will I be stuck with single loading.

TIA.

Isn't the barrel on your Howa a 12 twist?

Make up a dummy rd (no powder or primer) start long seat deeper until it fits mag. That's your max length, of course that may not be the best(most accurate seating depth).
Was hoping to avoid purchasing if it wasn’t going to suit. Average of $70/100 and low availability of options make life difficult.

Also might be worthwile finding the lands. Although the one Howa (308) I have has a long throat, much longer than mag length to touch the lands. Still worth checking out. I imagine you could load the 75 to 2.39 though.

Be thankful your Howa is an 8 twist. My Howa built Vanguard .223 is a 14 twist, and a skinny 14 twist at that. It won't shoot anything heavier than a 55 grain and it really doesn't like 55's all that much.

Try the Sierra 50 grain Blitz bullet - this worked really well in my 14" twist 222 with IMR 4198.

The Hornady 75 BTHP are designed to be seated to AR mag length. They shoot great across the course seated very deep.

Yup
Hornady 75’s
Sierra/nosler/berger 77’s
Good to 600 yds from the mag in an Ar
Easy to get to shoot
Lots of load data for different powders

That said if you want to shoot long bullets and your gun is a short action 1500 and not a mini
The short action has a mag spacer
Take the mag spacer out and put a full length follower in it or modify it

If it’s a mini action your stuck with AR mag length

I have a Howa .223
My advice is try Sierra 77gn TMK , or Hornady 73gn eldm
Load them to maximum Magazine lenght , choose your powder and load some test samples going up in 0.2 gn increases from about middle of the powder manufacturers recommended load data .
Watch carefully for signs of pressure and see what load shoots the best out of your initial testing .
Unless you are extremely lucky as a first time reloader , you won’t find the “ Holy Grail “ load straight away , but it will give you some hints as to which direction to go from there .

As mentioned by others - 69's, 75's, & 77's loaded mag length and fear not.

Gazzillions go down down range in this fashion with a high degree of accuracy for hi-power competition. Said bullets jump just fine. I've seen more than one clean at 600 yards on the MR1 target shot with mag length 77's. Ditto for the 200 & 300 yard reduced MR targets.

All of my load data is for AR service rifle, so hesitant to share. But for this weight bullet look at the "service rifle" section on many reload manuals for good starting point.

If you are on the hunt for heavy weight bullets suitable for mag-length loading and related, I encourage you to to check out RMR:
Very happy with results, cost and availability.

What twist rate ? You may not be able to shoot a pill that heavy. Tommy Mc
