How to work up a load?

Guys I am new to reloading and just got in my RCBS kit and everything that goes along with it. I am wanting to load some 90 grain bullets for my .270. How do you guys work up a load? I have a 100 yard range at my house so I can walk out the front door and start shooting. Thanks in advance

If this has been posted before please post a link and I might post at another site also to get everybodies opinion.

One other thing I wanted to ask was what does this statement mean:
One thing we know will help us is seating the bullets out further. I've found a good starting place is with the bullet just slightly off the lands -- say .005 inch or so.

What is "the lands". I have an Encore. How do I figure this out?

Once you find the bullet you want go to the reloading book of the bullet manufacture you want to use.Now decide what velocity you want to push that 90grn bullet and pick the powder that gets you close.Load 5 bullets and shoot .The lands are where the rifling starts in just in front of a loaded and chambered bullet. If you are just starting out you don't need to worry about where your lands are just load to the books case overall length.
Get a good rest to shoot from you can eliminate allot of user error with a good rest.

I would be very surprised if you can get a 90gr bullet seated out to the lands in a factory chambered 270. I've never been able to anyway. In my 270s Varget has been great for the varmint weight bullets and Reloader22 the hands down winner for 130gr and up. Hope this helps.

The way I work up a load is I start with the minimum powder charge for the bullet I'm using and I load 5 rounds, I increase the charge 1 gr and load 5 rounds until I get close to max. I go shoot them in 5 shot groups on a target marked with the load data. I take the tightest group and load 5 rounds with a .5 gr increased charge. I increase and decrease the charge until I get the groups I like, this is the way I do it it's time consuming but it gives me something to do.

175 GR. SIE HPBT IMR 4064 .308" 2.800" 41.5 2500 45,200 PSI 45.6C 2728 59,500 PSI

This shows data for Sie 175 gr SMK and IMR 4064 powder I use in my .308. another way to do it is pick a velocity you want and work around it that way or like I stated above. Start with 42 gr load 5 move up to 43 load 5 and so on. I hope this helps, once you get the hang of it you will enjoy playing with different loads.
