how to tell steel turning pilot from carbide one

I think you will find that with a discriminating eye, the carbide's a bit darker gray, for lack of better terminology. The stainless ones are more "bright" if you will...
 
OK Ben. There are no Stainless cutting tools. The are tool steel. You are correct on the color though. How is Arizona this time of year?


Misread OP's post. Ground tool steel would be better than stainless for the pilot too though.:)

I believe the OP is talking pilots, not turning tools. Also heard it was 120+ in Phoenix yesterday. In my judgement it is steamy in AZ this time of year :D
