How to Remove Chuck on Clausing Drill Press

Any one know how to get this chick off a Clausing Drill Press? It’s a Jacobs j33. Question is the piece above the chuck. Does it thread on?

Probably screwed on, there is a screw from the inside of the chuck in to the spindle, open the chuck all the way up and look inside. May need an impact driver to remove that screw,(should/maybe left hand threads) holding the spindle to spin off the chuck might be interesting

I figured it out.. It threads on and I used punch to loosen the threads....The some mild heat and a screw driver to get it out / off the taper.. The chuck is screwed up ( used drill press) the jaws are no parallel.. Might be time for new one..

What it appears to me what you have there is a drill chuck with an adaptor mounted on it. I think you still need a set of Jacobs chuck wedges to remove the adaptor. The designation "J33" is a Jacobs taper mount, not a thread.

Those Clausing’s are a different beast. Mine is just the same as the OP’s, threaded collar but it’s not an adapter in a standard chuck. The threaded collar on these chucks is for both removal and retaining the chuck. There used to be a number of these chucks available but no one seems to make them with the collar anymore. Edit: These are still available new from at least a couple of the large machining/tooling suppliers. The original chuck has an integrated extension on the body machined to fit a circlip to retain the collar. You could probably remove the collar from the original chuck and leave it threaded on the spindle if you wanted to use a standard chuck and remove it later.

Supposedly a reason for the collared chucks was the collar acted as a retainer to keep the chuck from coming off with side loads.

I have atleast 2 of those chucks new I a box
Whatcha got and are they for sale? I’m sure with all the messed up chucks you hear about on these things I’m sure they’d sell in a minute. I might be interested in a spare for just in case down the road.

My Clausing had minimal use. It came out of the prototype shop of a large electronics manufacturer in Seattle. They closed the shop and started contracting out the work to Asia. Typical story these days.
