How to measure your Bolt Action to get a tighter fitting bolt!

What or how to measure your Remington 700 SA Bolt Action to order up a larger bolt diameter to reduce bolt flex.

Thanks for your time in this request.

Bolt flex is a non issue. Tell us what is your total plan starting with an unmodified action? Changes need to be balanced with each other. Depending on your build, a new, tighter fitting bolt could be a good thing, or a complete waste. Another thing that you need to know is that replacement bolts are NOT drop ins.

Steve I've got a set of plug gages I made up just for that. I'll be out of town this week but if you'll be over my way next week let me know and we can meet up. My new shop is over in Newcastle off of Hwy 193.

You need to be able to pass a certain size thru both ends. Even tho a .705 may go in both sides it may take a .702 to go all the way thru. Adding .001 to a bolts diameter is not going to add measurable strength to fix that "flex"

Dusty, with a 700 bolt locking up front on the lugs wouldn't that take away the flex? It would have to be better then one that locks in the rear like a 788. Matt

If the action is true the bolt body will be centered in the race way when the lugs are seated. There is no flex. The only way I could see a bolt flexing is if it only made contact one one lug and the rear ring would not allow the bolt to seat the other lug. Then you could have some flex in the bolt body, but the problem is not the bolt its the un true action.
