How to kill a primer

I have a damaged case with a live primer in it I need to get rid of before I can scrap the case, what is the safest way to do this? Soak it in water? Smack it with a nail and hammer? I can't get it into a die or a chamber to push it out or ignite it.

I've used my decapping die to knock out countless primers and I haven't had one go off yet. How safe is it? I'm not sure, but if it were to touch off all the blast would be contained in the case and up into the RCBS deapping die shooting up then downward so I've never been too worried.

Edit: read your post too fast. If you can manage to chamber it just pop it off. If not, use the wd40 or whatever.

Soak in WD-40? How long? Both sides. I have a bunch of 223 that a cantankerous magazine in my AR15 chewed up. - Phil

since you are going to junk the case,if you are really worried about it just take a hacksaw and cut case off just above the web then deprime it.

Whatever you do, don't smack it with a nail and hammer as you're apparently considering doing. Without a rifle-bolt behind the case to keep the primer in, it will be ejected at high velocity and at the very least you'll have numb fingers on the hand that holds the nail. At worst it'll hit and destroy an eye. Primers are really nasty little brutes.

There was a previous thread on how to deactivate a primer. Someone did a test using different fluids, one surpassed all the others, may have been WD-40, BUT even the best performing fluid did not kill the primer 100% of the time.
