How to distinguish a Winchester Model 54 from a Winchester Model 70?

I purchased a Winchester action that I was told was a Model 70. I suspect it may be a Model 54. How does one determine what it actually is? Is there a database of models and serial numbers someplace I should be looking at? I need some steering as to where to go to figure out what I have.
