how to clean a slug barrel?

Having recently purchased two 20 gauge shotguns with rifled slug barrels I'm a little disappointed in the cleaning components available locally.

Most of what I'm finding is obviously for a smooth bore field barrel. Anyone having sucees cleaning a 20 gauge like you would a rifle bore?

I think you just need basic solvents for most saboted slugs like you would fire in a rifled barrel. The only thing that should be in there is plastic wad fouling and powder. Both are pretty easy to get out with the right solvent. Almost anything will eat the plastic, and just about anything will remove the powder fouling. At least that is what I found with a rifled Mossberg.

True, the problem I'm having is more about finding brushes etc that will clean the rifled bore.

Any suggestions?

I use a Hoppe's boresnake for my cut rifled slug barrel for my Remington 870 along with Shooter's choice. It does a great job of cleaning the barrel and I shoot 5-6 boxes for practice before deer season to transistion from rifle to shotgun slugs. I also test new ammo every season to see if there is something that will out shoot Winchester Partition Gold slugs in my shotgun. I am shooting 1-1.5 inch group at 100 yards. Good luck this season.

I noticed the same thing in my area for rifled shotgun cleaning items, the bare minimum.. I remove my rifled barrel, cut some oversize diameter patches, or I try to find the thicker cotton cloth to use over my 20 gauge brush.. Run three or four wet patches and leave it sit, continue like cleaning a rifle..

Pro Shot has a good selection of shotgun cleaning products and their shipping is great..

First, get one of these: http://www.boretech.com/products/shotgunjags.shtml

Second, get yourself a cleaning solvent that will clean powder residue, carbon and plastic. No copper solvents needed.

Third, with a 20ga brush (easy to find) clean it like you would a rifle.

I use wipeout foam, let it sit for a couple of hours, a few strokes with a nylon brush, and then patch dry.

Just get a 12guage brush for a 20, a 10guage brush for the 12ga. Works very well for me!
This tip was given to me by a gunsmith several years ago. Hope this helps?

Most Big box stores have the brushes, also look in the muzzleloader area. I just use Hoppe's #9.
