How to bring a lathe back into use after sitting idle

----bring a lathe back into use after sitting idle for months ?

My gut feeling:
Do a thorough lube and cleaning.
Turn the spindle manually for some number of turns.
Run at the lowest speed for a certain time.
Always run at low speed before using.

Any other suggestions ?

Mine sits for months. Keep it oiled while sitting. Fresh on the ways and turn it on. Same on the mill.

It depends on how long it has been sitting, I picked up a Taiwan Grizzly last year that was bought new in the early 80's by a University Professor that used it for one project at his house right after purchasing it. It sat for 40 years until I got it, It cleaned up absolutely beautiful, The face plate and 4 jaw still had wax paper on them and all the accessories were still packed in the little red tool box, Change gears, Steady, Follower etc.

The problem was the oil had dried to a hard goo and would not come off, I had to replace some bearings that were froze up with the goo. So check everything out real well, It will save you a headache in the long run.

It was the bearings in the Quick change gearbox that needed attention.

Most lathes, , especially modern gear head lathes, are very resilient.
An important thing is to use the lubricants that are recommended in the parts that are a wet sump system, such as the headstock and carriage.
If in doubt, we have always used Chevron Regal Turbine oil in everything. NEVER use motor oil or any other oils that feature deferment additives.

Another tip. Always clean the lead screw before threading. I think that is self explaining.
