How Much Should "You" Believe?

Wife and I were out looking at a new house for sale near my rifle range. We stopped there after a 450 yard paper match. Range officer told of a competitor shooting a 1.007" ( I think on all these details) at 450 yards.

I met the man who shot it in the WIND and saw the target. 10 shots = "I believe".

He used a Bostrom custom Dasher, with McGowen barrel that has a blown-out throat, fire-cracked for 4" and about 6,000 rounds through it.

He loaded 38+ grains of some kind of 4350 behind 105 Berger Hybrids way out to come close to what is left of the throat.

He regularly cleans with a very abrasive bore paste and it's not J.B.

I bought some of those hybrid 105's for my Dasher. Just tried to load 4350 in my Lapua cases. Tapping and squirming and shaking can get me 36.1 gr. 1/2 way up the neck. Then seating works but during measurement the powder pushed the bullet back up the neck. You cannot seat and hold enough neck tension it's so overfilled.

What do I believe other than the group? A 6,000 rd. bbl that shoots < 1/4moa? 38 gr. of 4350 in a Dasher?

My leg did not feel pulled.

I've heard so much outright bullsh** at the club ranges where I'm a member ( three), that I have to ignore most of it.

Had a guy tell me that he has a factory rifle, chambered in 270 and it will shoot "dime sized 5 shot groups at 300 yards all day long".

I decided to pull his chain & told him he should attend our local varmint match's, and he could walk away with all the cash winnings with a rifle that shot like that. Gave him the club locations (all within a short driving distance) and schedules, all on Saturday & Sunday's. He immediatly went into detail telling me why he could not possibly make them, just "too busy". Ya right! Truth is if he showed up at the matchs, he would be proven to be a liar.

How much should "you" believe? Nothing! Challange these braggarts to a side-by-side match, shooting for group or score, at any distance, and see how quickly they shut their mouths. I've never met one who would agree to shooting a match where their target results would be seen by others.

You only believe what u see for yourself....And sometimes only half of That??? You know like eagles picking kids up off the ground at a playground!!!!!

CaptainMel I shot right next to him it was 5 shoots not 10 the group size is correct his load was 46.4gr H4350 105 Berger Hybrid Wolf mag primers.4 shot measured .310 wind carried one to make 1.07 . The wind was gusting as high as 27 mph. maybe that's why he holds many national Black powder records. Good shooting Larry

Savage dasher, I believe you have a typo in your last post. there is no way to load 46. anything in a dasher case. I can't even cram that much 4350 into my 6.5X47L.

Well, that's what this thread is about. How much should you believe? :)

Gonna try those 36.1's I loaded. More fun than pulling them.

Try this:

"Good Shooting!" ... Larry (little)

Tom, Your right, i have a 10"drop tube when i tried RL-17 and H 4350 in the Dasher. The group at 500 were around an inch, but RL-15 was around .600 @ 500. So it is very possible......jim

Last year I tested ever kind of primers and powder testing the razz tuner brake.on my dashers. I shot over 6000 rounds last year testing. H4350 and wolf m primers were the best in my 3 guns.if you go to he has some of the test posted. This is my Christmas Present to All.You must use a drop tube and slow pore. 36. to 36.5 grains seems to be what most guns like.Depends on freebore. Good Shooting Larry

6.000 rounds? WOW!

That would cost thousands of dollars just to test. Unreal.

How many barrels did you go through?

Find it also hard to believe that Dasher shot so well with 6,000 rounds through the barrel. Also, why would anyone keep shooting a barrel with that kind of round count?

Man I'm way, way outta the loop.

We have done that much testing on the tuner breaks and the tuners. One barrel went at 4200 rounds. With the tuner it still was doing sub1/2''. 10Rd's later it was over1'' when we pulled it their was no rifling for over 18''.When you see Eric ask him to show you. Testing was how i found out about H4350 nothing was ever said in here about it. You know me i try to help others . Larry if you can list Eric web site so other can see thanks .Good Shooting Fat Larry

With a long drop tube and an intermittent pour that takes a long time, one can get more in a case than might be done any other way. Having said that, I still have issues with most of what I hear, and if the words "all day long" pass someone's lips, I KNOW what I am dealing with....gunshop bullshit. Nevertheless, if I were shooting a Dasher, given that I do all of my load workups at the range, I would definitely be trying some 4350 and a couple of different primers, just on the off chance that there was something there. If you don't look, you won't find. On the 6,000 rounds, I believe that he mentioned 3 Dashers.

Well I do not believe it, I have 2 witnesses, I shot a 3 shot group of .024 with a load of 26.6 Gr TAC, 71/2 rem primer and a 60 gr. Sierra Varmint (1375) IN A 223 ai. 32 degrees and wind at 6-7 mph NE shooting West. Luck sometimes happens, oh yes I was offered a $100.00 if I could do it agian, thanks but That was my last loaded rounds. Luck Happens. sorry I forgot 300yds

The fellow that shot that 1" group at 470??? yards told me he had 6,000 shots through that McGowen barrel. That was ONE barrel, not the three barrels Larry was talking about.

That shooter told me he used his borescope and saw about 4" of firecracking past the chamber but the rifle still shot well, as his group showed. All I can do is watch, listen and keep my head from shaking.

That rifle and those tuner brakes were buildt by:

Also noticed "Savagedasher" is pictured in the middle. Think he was second in that Florida Championship.
