How much crush

How much crush on a false shoulders for Fire forming cases do you all think is best for forming cases?
5 to 6 thou feels pretty good to me when I close the bolt on my Lapua 6 Br forming to 6 Brx brass. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Use only as much as it takes to overcome the extractor and ejector so that when you close the bolt, open it, and close it again, the false shoulder is intact and still working. At the other extreme, pay attention to what Dusty just said.

Youd really be surprised at how many ive seen galled up. New slick actions that sound like they have lapping compound on the lugs. Only used for fireforming, must be soft lugs

It doesn't feel tight enough to damage the lugs. I have a lite coat of lube on the back side. Plus the bullets are jammed 15. The bolt close about to 3 o'clock before it starts tightening up. Does this sound about right?

Keep the lugs greased. Slop it on there not a lite coat. Use a good grease like lucas red n tacky

Yes. it should feel like it has enough false neck to overcome the extractor and the ejector while staying flush against the bolt, the bolt will begin to show slight torque to seat the case on that false neck.

When you search for size and length for the false neck, you probably don't have the ejector pressure and you probably hook the case under the extractor, so you must make some margin for those additional forces.

And, nothing wrong with seating to with a jam to help. Just play it safe and don't go overboard with the fireforming load level and you will be fine. Some folks do the whole job with only the jam, others the false neck, and some combine them. All three methods work.

I have the ejector pin removed. I'll shoot a few test rounds and see how they turn out. With 5 thou shoulder crush a 15 thou jammed. Thanks for the input.

BTW, I have not done it, but more than one friend has won some 600y club matches while fireforming.
