How many trim and point?

If you trim and point, what trimmer and die do you use?

Is it worth it? What kind of results are you having? How about consistency at longer ranges?

I am tossing around the Hoover die and a Sinclair meplat trimmer.

I personally have never pointed or trimmed meplats, but my many HM buddy uses the Whidden pointer for his LR bullets. He indicates that Berger's show the most improvement vs Sierra's. Saving him at least 1 MOA at 1K.

I use the Whidden Pointing die, to point Sierra's .224 80s, 6mm 107s, and 6.5 142s.

I have tried trimming in various combinations with pointing and didn't see much value in it.

From my perspective the advantage of pointing is not the increased BC, but in the improved consistency in holding elevation at long range.

Since we started pointing the 142s, (my son) David has competed in three 1000 yard matches (aggregates) with the 6.5-284; The Oregon LR State Championship (2nd), The Rattlesnake LR regional (1st), and Berger SW LR Nationals (4th in the Any/Any - Any/Iron agg). I'm not saying he has done well just because of the bullet pointing, as you have to be able to read the wind to keep them in the center, but we believe the tighter elevation makes that bull just a little bit wider (by that I mean fewer corner shots).

In midrange matches with the 107 SMK in a 6BR, it is much harder to assess, it appears that David's X counts may be up a little, but is the bullet pointing helping? Inconclusive, but I'm fairly certain the pointing isn't hurting performance.
