HOW MANY RDS BEFORE CLEAN BARREL SETTLES DOWN

I have a 7WSM broughton #5 barrel Stiller action Nightforce . After I clean it thoroughly it takes 8to 10 rds before it settles down and starts shooting it has about 650 rds down it is this normal.

10 years ago my BBLS , even after proper break in, got fairly dirty and were never very easy to clean. They would settle down in 1 or 2 shots and shoot good.

My new tubes (all Kriegers) are REMARKABLE at how easy they break in and clean up, BUT...they take 6 - 10 shots to really settle down. Untill I figured it out I remember thinking during the sighter period..."WTF"..."What the hell is going on"!! Then things would settle down and the targets looked good (when I did my part ).

Actually, I went from cleaning between relays and shoot-offs with the early BBLs to shooting all day without cleaning with the newer ones.

Problem solved.

I've never seen much difference except for the first few shots from a clean barrel leave a little slower than the rest of a 20 to 30 shot string. The first 2 or 3 go about a quarter MOA low at long ranges. Velocity tests showed a 10 to 20 fps average increase starting with a clean barrel.

What barrels are you posting about.

I never use oil. I use wipe out with excelerator ,bronze brush it, then patch it dry, bore scope it ,if it has carbon ring I remove it then go shoot.

I know this last weekend I was shooting my 6.5x47 after a good cleaning. I was using my chronograph and I could see each shot getting a little faster than the previous one. Seemed to stabilize around the 5th shot. IIRC the first shot was around 2715 fps and quit climbing around 2750.

With my 308s at 1000 yards my first shot is usually between ½ and 3/4 MOA low and they seem to be to the right, but that may be an anomaly. Second shot is usually inside of ½ MOA but still low, by the 3rd shot it's tracking as it should.

I agree with XTR. I shoot a 6SLR and a 284 Shehane. I shoot Molly coated bullets in both rifles and the last patch that goes down the bore after cleaning has colloidal graphite on it. My C/B shot is low and slow as recorded by my chronograph, but substantially less than before I started using these friction reducers.
As always, it is " a way, not the way".

Squeaky clean 22 rim fire barrels put their first shot about an inch high at 50 yards, over 2 inches high at 100. Smooth bores let them leave faster. Settled down to point if aim after 3 or 4 shots fouling the barrel to slow them down so they drop more at target range. Put those fouling shots into the backstop, not on target.
