How long does it take to make a barrel blank?

Just my own curiosity here.

Starting with bar stock and normalized for coffee breaks and whatnot, how long does it take a skilled machinist who knows what he's doing to finish a blank including profiling and hand lapping?

Is there a big time difference between cut and button rifled?

Button is faster.
From goin to Shilens open house, Probably the longest part is the drilling of the hole, about 20-30 mins depending on length, caliber.
Reaming is pretty fast, as is honing.
Pulling the button takes about 5 seconds,
hand lapping about 20-30 mins,
inspection 5-10 mins.

From what Ive read cut rifling takes 20-30 passes per land. Everything else should be the same.

The bottleneck in the button rifling process comes after buttoning. The stress reliving process takes a day. Since the makers of cut-rifled barrels typically eschew stress relieving, this bottleneck does not exist. Ultimately, it may be a wash.
One friend, who produces cut barrels, will take about a half day to produce one barrel, including contouring. WH

I've got a good friend who makes barrels.
The only apprentice "Boots Obermeyer ever had" never really timed it but seems to me the machine runs longer than 30 minutes.
I'm planning on doing a Video of some barrel making history and posting it here at some point. Fascinating to hear how it all really started and by who. I want to document it before it's gone.

Id love to see it

My jaw was dropped the other day hearing how Ackley got started, the PPC, the origin of cut rifling, 5R rifling. Who's Barrels Walt Berger used, Lester Bruno, among others. How Krieger, Brux, Bartlein started
How the Trinidad gun school started. I'm no video guy, but after about the 5th time hearing different stories. I asked why the info out there doesn't always line up. He said a lot of those guys are gone. I really feel like I need to get it on tape before it's gone too.
A lot of interesting history on Boots.
