How long before you adjust for throat erosion?

308 FTR Savage with right at 1000 rounds. Had a good load worked up and started having issues. Thought I was too close to the lands and causing seating depth to be just a few thousandths off, so I backed and it shot a little better but still had the elevation stringers .

So I went deeper,5 thou deeper than the load that shot good originally. Shot another set of groups and they were the best yet.

Is 1000 rounds normal? Abnormal for warm 308 loads?

I would be more suspicious of bore condition &/or carbon at the leade/throat before chasing my tail seating bullets in.005" increments.

A bore scope will eliminate all doubt!!

I need to find a borescope and look. I had cleaned it the best I could with Butchs and some JB in the throat area , but without a bore scope, you just dont know.

FWIW in my Palma rifle after 1000 rounds (155 Sierras, Varget) my throat had only moved about .005" and I think a lot of that was during break-in in the leade area. After 1500 it still has not changed. My cleaning regimen is clean every 300-400 rounds using Sweet's on a nylon brush for 20 or so passes, Butch's on a patch for 20 or so passes, JB Cleaner for 5-10 passes, JB Polish for 20 passes. So far so good...

So .005" in the first 1000 may be normal....I was cleaning to bare steel after every match and then running a patch with kroil. Satisfied after letting it go longer between cleanings last two times shooting, that I was doing myself no favors taking a clean bore to a match, especially the palma matches with only two sighters.
