How fine a resolution

Ok for the home hobby machinest whom wants to chamber his own barrels what resolution is acceptable for dial indicators,is 0005 good to go for dialing in a chamber or is .0001 required?
Also what is preferd for all round measuring the Interapid (finger) type or the more traditional dial type of indicator.....do I need a couple of each?,I do notice that the finger type have less travel but what else is the main difference.
Is dial better than digital,I see near eveyone uses dial measuing devices and assume that there is a good reason for that, what brand of depth gauge should I be looking at and how fine a measuring increments do I need?
As you may have guessed I am looking to purchase some equipment but dont want to waste my money and have to purchase twice, sorry for the multiple questions.

Regards Chris.

You will need at lease one .001" or .0005" indicator and a .0001" indicators. I prefer test indicators. I have two Mitutoyo .0005" indicators and two .0001" indicators. My next purchase will be a .000050" indicator.

Use the .0001" to "rough" indicate, then move to the .0001" indicators to do the final adjustments.

My depth micrometers are Starrett. Most of my tools are Starrett, Mitutoyo, or Interapid.

P.S. Home hobby machinist doesn't mean you have to compromise accuracy. Aspire and learn to do better work than the professionals and you'll be just fine.

A test indicator with a long probe to reach up inside the barrel so you can center the neck area works great. Mitutoyo make one and I think Brown and Sharpe also makes one.

A dial works great as you can see what the needle is doing between the marks.

Not trying to hi jack this but most lathes that the average home gun smith will not have, .0000050 capability..0001 will be fine. But the best you can afford. You will need one with 1/2 to 1'' travel for rough in. Good tooling is where accuracy comes from. Larry
