49E8C068-1BE4-4CC7-BC1C-40B3B8E2E2A4.jpeg i finally got a scope for my super Blackhawk (thanks Jimmymac), and I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to mount it.

I’d like to keep the weight back to help balance the Gun which feels a little front heavy, so I’m thinking of using a mount like this. I’ve never handgun hunted with a Scope before, so I’m not sure if there’s a reason not to do this. Cylinder Loading seems fine, eye relief not a problem, anything else? Is the higher mounting of the scope going to cause me problems somehow?

Should I be concerned about using a mount for a low recoil rifle on a large caliber handgun?

Any thoughts, opinions, and advice is welcome.

Neil

I don't see anything wrong with it. I once used a similar mount on a Dan Wesson that clamped to the barrel rib and had no issues even though the rib wasn't nearly as stout as the Ruger milled rib you have.

You're much better off mounting rings to the barrel, and you are going to want some of the weight towards the muzzle. Leupold makes a set of rings that are high enough to allow the scope to clear the rear sight so that you don't have to remove it.

Just curious...do their mounts fit on a barrel with the milled rib like the one pictured? I have never handled that style Ruger, but I assume the rib is integral to the barrel?

Depends on some things. Forward mounting on the barrel puts the gun muzzle heavy. Rear mounted puts the weight back in your hands. Both methods are good and decent. A high mounted scope can sometimes feel awkward if you shoot a lot of irons because you have to drop your arm. Single actions with rear scopes can recoil the scope into your wrist when using heavy loads and a loose grip so hang on tight.

Yes. Ruger also makes rings in the same fashion that clamp to the rib. Too much weight to the rear results in more muzzle flip.

That P.E.P.R. is a bit flexible. I would also suggest direct ring mount and forget the cantilevered mount (I had one on a milder recoiling rifle and my scorer could see the scope flex upon recoil....pas bon for a scope)

Nice looking arrangement although a lot of mounting going on there, If You have large hands maybe a rubber Pachmeyer or similar grip may make the feel of it more secure, under control.

I'd go direct ring mount with factory ruger rings. Mine have been prone to working loose though, so either a small dab of blue loctite or check the side screws often. As riflewoman says that rear wieght and scope position may bite you. To me the lower the better also even if the scope is more forward biased it should still balancestors well as a total package when used with factory rings.
I have one of those hunters also and it is a accurate sob. I use alliant 2400 ,20.5 grains over 240 xtp with a mild crimp.

I have a B-square mount on a 629 S&W. Only problem I've had with the mount is I had to loctite the fasteners or it works loose with heavy loads. My scope is mounted considerably further forward than that in the photo you posted. As others have mentioned, seems to help with muzzle flip.
Also, I freely admit I am NOT an excellent shot with a pistol, so I stay well within my personal limits.

Have fun, whatever you chose. :)

Nice scope! Nice gun. I have hand gun hunted a bit. With that Blackhawk Hunter I’d just use some Ruger rings as intended and call it a day.

The thing about handgun hunting with a scope is to minimize offhand shots IMO. It’s always about using a rest or third point of contact. Set up with a shooting stick or hunt on the backside of a tree where you can use the tree to press your firearm into a solid hold. That to me is really the deal that will make you accurate and confident.

Good luck.

Weight over the front is a good thing for both recoil and stability. The factory Ruger grips suck at properly distributing recoil in your hands. JRH Advanced Gunsmithing in Nevada will make grips based on your hands and also does grip extensions that make a huge difference. He's the Ruger single action guru!

SWD makes some good points. Weight over the front isn’t bad at all IMO, which is why I suggested the Ruger rings.

It looks like you have the Bisley Hunter model. I never had an issue with recoil and that factory grip. I can’t say the same with the standard Blackhawk grips. Also, my Performance Center Smith caused me a lot more pain even though it appeared as if it wouldn’t. This stuff is very subjective and has a lot to do with the differences between individuals, which is why I point it out.

Me...I’d shoot it and see what your hands tell you before going aftermarket. Everyone is different.

Ruger rings are investment cast like their guns & you will find it impossible to keep hardware tight & scopes mounted/zeroed.

Drill & Tap the top strap & install Leupold Dual Dovetail base & rings.

Purchase a Freedom Arms Revolver & you will never regret or look back!!

I've not had problems with stout loads of AA#9 and 240 grain XTP's in a .44 mag.

Some good thoughts I didn’t even consider. Never thought about recoil the scope into my wrist.

Thanks for the feedback! Neil

I kinda like the setup in the picture, the picatinny rail is nice to have to give you the ability to move the scope for-aft on the fly for proper eye relief. I like to buy my scope rings that I can loosen or tighten with a coin and the Ruger rings will not give you any adjustment without tools handy.

Run 24+ grains of a slightly faster burn rate powder like WW296 or H110 or LilGun to acquire more velocity & your Ruger will shake itself to pieces.

One doesn't need tools w/ Ruger rings...they stretch & shake loose all by themselves.

Exactly !
