How do I spend $1200

I'm a newbie to this long range shooting, I want my 1st long range gun to be a .243 because my son just turned 14 so we need a new deer rifle in the house. But I want to be able to shoot this deer rifle a long way,I want to learn to shoot 1000yds). I've been reading forums and studying guns for a while and I've about decided to by a Savage 12BVSS which I can get for around $650 which leaves me a little over $500 for a scope. I need a scope that I can deer hunt with and hopefully use to shoot long distances. I'm interested in mil-dot scopes. If you guys where in my shoes how would you spend your money?

A 4X16 Burris Signature Select with the mil-dot would certainly fill the bill for a combination deer and long range scope, or save another $500.00 and buy a Nightforce 5.5 X 22 X 56

One proble with most scopes is that they do not have enough internal adjustment to zero at 100 yards and then elevate all the way to 1,000. This is one reason that scope mounts with a 20 moa slope are in use, it allows the recticule to be centered in the scope mechanically at 1,000 yards which is where adjustments shoud be the most accurate. You would probably need somewhere in the area of 26-28 mintues of elevation to go from a 100 yard zero to 1000 yard using a flat base. Of course if you go with a sloped base then such a scope may not zero vertically at 100 yards.

The NXS mentioned above does have enough internal elevation to go from 100 to 1000 but they retail for around 1,400. Some suppliers may have a better price they cannot advertise so you migh do better checking around.

My rifles used for long range are dedicated to that purpose so I'm using the sloped bases.

I believe there may be some less pricey scopes with enough internal elevation out there, you might call Chris at SWFA to see what he carries.
