How do I shrink my groups?

IMGP0644.jpg

This is from a LW 26 inch 1:8 6MM NBR with 80 rounds down the tube shot at 100 meters from a Savage F110. The OAL I am using is 2.326 with the bullets jammed 0.02 into the lands.

Somehow I was expecting much smaller groups... ideally about half the size. How do I get there?

I am limited to VV and Tubal powders only. Unfortunately nothing else is available, ever.

All help is appreciated.

If it's a sporter weight barrel, and stock action ....base your rifles success with 3- shot groups or you'll continue to be disappointed.

Use wind flags and learn how conditions affect the bullet.
Make sure your rest set-up is rock-steady....and your 'form',i.e. grip, cheek pressure, keep to a minimum), thumb pressure over the tang is consistent.

Reduce trigger pull to a minimum...yet safe level.

After the above has been addressed...play with seating depth.

Number each shot in sequence to give you,and us) a better understanding of the barrels idiosyncrasies...it appears 2 touch and 3 go out.

Not a sporter weight barrel.

Rests are rock steady.. trigger is at 4lbs.
Shooting form is correct, and I do use wind flags.

Am also going to try and play with the charge.. and see where it gets me.

Hello Alfy...you are luky to have access to vita-vori powedrs there...I see on your target that you are using 150...I tried it and had poor results...but ...with 540 and the 105 class bullets results were excellent...If that powder was available here on a predictable and economical basis I would use nothing else...use a charge aprox 1gr below the point of poppin primers....and jam the bullets....let us know what happens...you will prolly runoff to the shooting matches with the new loads and forget all abut us poor lil' hillbillys...Roger

Roger,
I do have N540, N140 and tons of N150... which is why I decided to try the N150.

I dod load an arbtary load of N540, and an arbitary load of N150. The 150 is doing better.

At this point I have not done any real load development, or even brass prep.
Unfortunately I wont be able to shoot until early October. :,

You may be fighting the trigger. If your shooting from the bench.
4 pounds can be tough. If you can try to adjust the trigger For less pull. You may be pulling your shots.
One group is a wind report {horizontal }
Looks like you had some hard blows at times.

Very good advice in my opinion. I'd not change a thing except suggest not jamming the bullets, but starting with about a .02 jump and see what that does for accuracy. That could very well be an issue with that rifle. If using .02 is an improvement, try more variation before jamming again. I've not had much luck jammping any of my bullets in any rifles....but that's just me.

Couple of assumptions I made: Decent front and back rest? Shooting off a solid bench? Shooters is not a totally new shooter?

Those group sizes are pretty bad I think. I've only had factory rifles that did that close to 1 inch at 100 yards. Anything custom I'm owned has been closer to .5-.6 inch with my worst loads! With his rifle I'd think he'd get, as he said, about half the size groups he is, somewhere closer to .4 inch at 100 yards.

I'm not familiar with the OP's '6MM NBR', but my Savage 110 converted to a 6mm BR does a lot better at 100 yds. My twist is 12 so I use lighter bullets in the 60-80 gr range. With 80 grain bullets I am getting a little less than half that group size with about 30-32 gr of Varget. I don't have load info for heavier bullets or for the powders the OP uses. I suspect the recommendations above will eventually lead to a good load.

Papersniper would love your loading data for the .3 inch edge to edge groups. In particular if you have any for the 77 gr Lapua's.,BTW the measurements on the target are edge to edge, and I will be happy with .4 inch edge to edge groups)

Treeman: I do need to work up a decent load, unfortunately am not going to get a chance to shoot for a few weeks. I have the N140 on hand so will give it a try.
