Hornet target

Doing some loading trials for the 22 Hornet. Top left is A1680 12.3gns and top right is 12,7 gns.
Bottom left orange is Lil'Gun12.5gns and bottom right is 12.7gns. All 5shot groups at 50 yds. The bullets are old .223 45gn Remington bullets that I loaded. I'm sure there was shooter error in this also. CZ 527 16 twist

While AA 1680 can make some very decent Hornet loads, it is near impossible to beat Lil Gun for this one cartridge.

Yes, Lil" Gun works magic in the elderly Hornet. I have a CZ 527 Hornet rifle. This rifle shoots cast bullets with powder coat great at 200 yds. This is considered very close range in Wyoming.
Some times late in the Fall I shoot some close range Prairie Dogs. :)

Using H110 with Armscor cheapo 40 gr HP. My 527 shoots those groups at 100. I will be switching to regular Hornet bullets in the 35 gr range and going to hope for better groups. Just seems that the Serria 40 hp needs to jump about 150 thou to keep in mag seating depth, were the chepo's can just about seat at lands and still stay in mag length.

I was told the CZ 527 chambered for the 22 Hornet has a .224" bore. So you don't have to get Hornet specific bullets and you have tons to choose from.

Cade,

Nice shooting. Be cautious while working with Lil Gun. It is a great powder but I have experienced loads that were perfectly fine one day blowing primers out the next in a 221 fireball. This was with very little temperature change between the two days and it has happened to not only me but another friend that shoots the 221 as well. While some of my best groups had come from Lil Gun I ultimately moved away from it due to pressure spike issues. I don't have any experience with the 22 hornet but the powder families use in the two cartridges are very similar. I'm not trashing the powder or saying not to use it, just keep a mindful eye on things and watch for any signs of pressure.

Thanks for posting the targets.

Thanks I have heard of this powder spiking. Most of what I've read the folks are using 13-13.2 grains which is a compressed load. I think the 12.5gns is my max. Don't want to load 200 of them and have a problem. Want to try H110 and 2400 also.

Yes, I agree. Problem is that the really pointy ones are too long for the mag if you are trying to get close to the lands.

Does it hurt to run .223 bullets in a .224 bore?
Accuracy maybe, not anything else.Nice Hornet groups at the top.I shoot a Hornet 10 in Contender in IMSHA Hunter class. Was a fun offhand game Always used 2400 because I had a bunch. With a 12x Leupold it was a 1 in gun at 100 yds. I was sorry to see that game go away in my area.

That's right. But at least the Cz 527 works great when single feeding. Somehow all you gotta go is drop the cartridge in the action just like you would with a single shot bolt rifle and it feeds flawlessly one at a time.
