hornady vs. remington or winchester brass

Is there any difference in quality between hornady and remington or winchester brass. I know it is nowhere near lapua.

Of the 3 mentioned..... Winchester would be my pick of the litter everytime. You can get a few bad cases out of a hundred or more in ANY brand you buy, but again of the 3 you mentioned..... Winchester would be the one I'd recommend especially if it is to be used for hunting or just general shooting. WD

I like the winchester also but the hornady is good stuff too. It may not last as long but certainly works good.

I've used both Rem and Win with excellent result in the 223, 22 250, 243 and 308 and quite frankly can't tell the difference in performance.

The thing I hate about Win brass is all the defects - the last bag of 100 in 22 250 had 9 case deformed in the neck / shoulder area so bad that they were unusable.

The hornady seemed to always have a "higher quality" feel to it compared to other brands. But Winchester did feel pretty nice too.

I find more Winchester at the range than hornady.

I have been lucky to pick up ounce fired Hornady brass at the range I shoot at.Being that I keow to who shoot it in the first place,I went on a limb and tried it.As of today I can say its good brass,I have 4 firings so fare and like it.I will even add that picking it up at the range, I found that Hornady went to crimping the primers in on some loads.I soon found out it was the Superformance ammo and the 175gn match.

The first thing I did was to anneal the necks then resized to bump the shoulders back to fit my chamber. After that I neck sized with a Lee collet die.My 43gn load of Varget under a 175gn SMK will hold a 1/2 inch ( 5 shots ) at 200.AS of today I had to anneal the necks and FL size ( bump the shoulders ) again.

I say use it for I am as long as my shooter friend keep throwing it away. But I do have some Lapua for later. ;)

A friend of mine returned from sniper school and gave hundreds of once fired Federal and Hornady match cases in 308. I annealed all the brass after sorting and cleaning. The Hornady brass is appears to be of good quality and no issues after several firings.

Hornady is pretty good quality. Will give you better "out of the box tolerances". It's a little softer than most brass so it may not last quite as long as some in high pressure rounds that are pushed to the limit. But for normal SAAMI listed pressures, it should last plenty long.

Remington is fine if you don't plan on shooting competitively because their tolerances are the worst I've ever seen. I've had neck walls that were .007" different from one side to the other. .003" to .004" difference in neck wall thickness is almost guaranteed with EVERY piece. Weight is all over the place. You can find very accurate loads with Rem brass, but you have to put a lot more work into it than you would with other brands of brass if you want it to stay somewhat consistent. And primer pockets are VERY weak when pressures get high.

Winchester is tough and will hold high pressures better IMO. Tough primer pockets, good neck thickness consistency, and pretty tight weight tolerances for the price. I've actually compared weights and measurement consistencies of Winchester brass to Norma brass and found them to be very close to the same in quality. Being that it is tougher, it needs to be annealed a little more often if you want to avoid excessive shoulder bounce-back for proper head spacing.

I think of Federal brass like this...Winchester consistency with weak Remington Primer pockets.

Nosler Custom brass is very consistent in every aspect, but very weak primer pockets as well. And again, that shouldn't matter if staying within normal SAMMI pressures. Of course it's VERY expensive too.

And lastly, NONE of the previous mentioned brass types even come close to comparing to Lapua in any way shape or form ;)
