Hornady V-max bullets

Last night i was loading some 20 gr Hornady V-max bullets in 17 rem fireball. On several of the loads the red tip on the bullet was pulled out during the seating process. I was able to get the tip out of the die and push it back into the tip of the bullet. Has anyone ever had this happen before with the tip coming off while seating the bullet. I rechecked all the settings on the die and everything seemed to be ok. I've loaded hudreds of V-max bullets in the past but in different calibers. This is the firs round in the 17 so im not sure if its just an issue with the bullets or the die. Any help of info would be appreciated.

Sounds like the seating stem is seating the bullet by the plastic tip before it contacts the bullet itself. What type/ brand seating die do you have? The mfg. can probably modify the seating stem or make a new one if you send them a few bullets.
Just my .02 cents.

Echo6412: never had a bullet tip problem w/ V-Max, but have opened a factory sealed box of 500 Sierra 32 & 39 BlitzKings, in 20 cal., and found a few "hollow-points", with the green tips lose in the box. Also had a few that were "flat-point". My confidence in their quality took a nose-dive after that-- never had it w/ 22 cal & larger.:,

Do you have a Forster seater die?

You may need to spin the seating stem in a drill or lathe while deburring the cup with fine sandpaper or a stone.
