Anyone here use Hornady seating dies? If you do this might be a great upgrade to think about. I use them predominantly for my reloading, while they provide great accuracy I've always felt they could be better. I took 30mins tonight and tried an upgrade I've been thinking about for a while. I made a new floating seater for the generic seating die.
I had a piece of 6mm barrel laying around and I stared by indicating the bore in just like a chamber. Once it was dead nuts over a 2" section I turned the outside diameter to .626". The bore of the die body is .627", this little clearance allows Very nice floating movement. Next I took my 6br reamer and ran it in until the shoulder/ body junction was cut into the sleeve.
I was using an AMax seating stem which measures the sane diameter as a C bit. I ran the C bit in until I was certain it would clear the length of the stem. I parted the sleeve and put it into a collet head chuck. The stem would just start into the bore of the sleeve. Using 220g lapping compound I ran the stem into bore creating a very light slip fit.
Next I cut the sleeve fit a retaining ledge and polished.
All in all I think it's the best upgrade I could come up with and it should load extremely straight ammo. Only time will tell though. I figured some here might like the idea.
