Hornady brass .. any good?

A friend and I were discussing the state of affairs with U.S. manufactured brass. He and I have plenty of experience, and opinions) regarding Remington and Winchester offerings. However, neither of us has dealt with Hornady brass and we began to wonder if Hornady might produce a product which doesn't require the volume of case prep of the "Big Two". We're prairie dog shooters, so we've spent many hours of our lives trimming, chamfering, etc.

There's no doubt that European brass tends to be more consistent, and I don't want to start a flame-throwing session)! For the sake of this discussion, I'd be interested to know how Hornady compares with Win and Rem.

Thanks for your input!

Tom

Tommie: You did not mention what cartridges are involved, but if it's one of the more popular, Nosler Custom brass, available thru Sinclair,, and others I'm sure) is very high quality. When I first opened the box, thought I had bought Lapua, with a Nosler headstamp. It is pricier than the "others", but you get what you pay for.

Tommie the Hornady brass that i have used has all come from buying Hornady ammunition. It has all been pretty consistent as far as weight of cases, primer pocket depth and such. Usually there isn't a slug of brass where the flash hole was punched.

I have found that when trimming every 5th case or so the mouth of the brass will be uneven it isn't square, but i find this with all brands of brass.

I would say that the Hornady brass is comparable to Winchester and way better than Remington.

I don't own any Hornady brass, because I read negative opinions on several forums.Rumor is that Winchester makes it for Hornady.

I put all my Hornady brass in the recycle bucket. I have experienced too many case head separations from once fired brass to keep it. I had this happen with three calibers too. I do not use the stuff at all.

The only Hornady brass I have used has been from their factory ammo 204, thus it's once fired.

Out of 100, I tossed 5 for weight variations, but other than that it is fine. I agree, way better then Remington in the same caliber.

I bought 15 boxes of 32 gr. Hornady ammo for my .204 Ruger back in early June of 2004 when the .204 Ruger first came on the market. I have had very good luck with most of this Hornady brass. The 15 boxes I bought were from two different lots. One lot of brass has a primer pocket that is so small in diameter than my primer pocket uniformer will not fit into the primer pocket. Both lots of brass work just fine, no case head separations that some talked about and many of these casings have been fired 7 and 8 times. I do use a Redding Type S bushing neck sizing die and have used a full length die to set the shoulders back after the fifth time they have been fired.

Tried a packet of this. Two misfires - pulled the bullets out of those two to see what was going on - there was no powder in them at all. On reflection, we were pleased that there was no powder at all rather than say a 10% excess or worse still just enough powder to lodge the bullet in the barrel - I would like to think we would have checked the barrel before the next shot, but maybe not everyone would have done so.
