Hornady 7mm 180gr ELDM's

Hi all..
I've been told recently that the new lot of these bullets don't blow up..
The ones I have there's been 6 blow ups..
3 in a 7mm saum
3 in a 284 that were doing sub 2800fps..
How can I find out what date the newer bullets were made from..?

Have hornady thickened up the jackets..?

I shot those about three years ago in my 8 twist 7mmRM at about 2930fps and no problems at all. Shot them to a mile. How old is your lot?

Will it tell me on the boxes the manufacturing date.
In my 284 I fired about 900 of them through it before I lost 3 bullets on there way to the target..
My saum launched them at 2940fps..
I think the boxes of eldms I have are the same lot..

I quit using them because they were blowing up in my 7 saum and they never acknowledged it similar to the 147 ELD.
I’m not going to risk it happening again.
Sucks as my initial lot of 180’s shot fantastic.
Now I shoot the 183SMk and 190LRHT
No issues with those.

I've shot hundreds of 180gr hybrids since in my 284 with no issues so it must be the ELDM bullets failing..
Used 180gr scenars aswell with no issues

I would find a new bullet, thats what I did. After suffering several blow up in several calibers just like you I took my money someplace else. Life is too short to shoot crap bullets.

It's not only the fps, but the barrel twist.
What is the twist is those 2 barrels?

Why not just go back to the 180 Hybrid’s? Great bullet that never has any issues. Hornady has a well known history of bullets that blow up. Like Stomp said life is too short to waste your time with junk bullets.

1 in 9 in my 284 which has a 26 inch barrel..
1 in 8.25 in my 30 inch saum barrel..
I still use 180gr 184gr hybrids and 195gr elite hunters which are also superb..
The eldms were a cheaper offering and I thought they were very good..
Berger prices in the uk have gone up by 25 percent plus and the bergers mentioned vary from £105 per 100 count box upwards..
The price increase was by the importer not berger..
It'll be interesting if hornady bring out the aeromatch in 7mm and rival the bergers for less money..
For now I've switched to the 7mm 180gr scenars for my 284 as they cost around 50 percent less than the bergers.

I've been shooting them at 3000-3100fps from a 9 twist 7-300 Win mag the last 5 years with zero issues.

It's best to keep hornadys under 300K RPMs.

It's strange why some don't get any blow ups..
A mate used them in his 28 nosler at warp speed with zero blow ups

My 7 mm Ultra Mag with a 34” 9 twist 4 groove Krieger would grenade them regularly and occasionalily a 175 gr SMK and every once in awhile a Berger 180 gr Hybrid.

Another thing is to keep your barrel clean.
If it gets a build up of hard carbon, that will hurt those jackets.
If it's older and has a lot of rounds on it, fire cracking will rip a jacket also.

What he said. Using a couple Tubb TMS rounds through the barrel every 200-300 rounds will keep that throat smooth too.

Hundreds of bergers and 70 or 80 scenars went through my 284 barrel after the ELDM's blew up..
The barrel had seen over 2000 shots when they blew up..
I emailed hornady asking if they were going to make the aeromatch bullets in 7mm 180gr weight bullets and they said not at the moment.
I emailed again and mentioned the 7mm 180gr ELDM's blowing up and they never replied.
My barrel is clean for every match

Not sticking up for Hornady but, I've had Bergers blow-up in a different caliber also.

I've heard of bergers blowing up..
I know somebody who had a 195gr elite hunter blow up aswell..
A slight flaw in the jacket isn't gonna help going the speed they reach.
