Hornady 77gr AeroMatch

Never heard of these. But I agree. Between the TMK and SMK, they'd have to be priced to compete in my opinion since there's not a big void in the accurate 77 gr bullet category.

Blue Collar has the 77 on hand $124 a 500 ct
and they show the 69 as well same price as above.
There is a whole other thread I think in this site for the Aeromatch Disturbance as copying Berger or Sierra ..... YMMV

I still shoot PRVI 75gr bthp and they hold 10 ring better than I can at 500m and irons. Classic Hornady BTHP 75 shoot good enough too. I guess the desire to shoot little 5.56 at 1000 drives these bullet designs and the Big Red H marketing machine.

The 77 smk I load shoot .39-.52 in all of my gas guns. I’m all for saving a dollar but I’m not sure it’s worth the headache or the reality that the hornady may not shoot as good to switch to them and do load development again to save $38 on 500 bullets

As much as I like and shoot Hornaday bullets I can not understand why they brought these out. I'll just stick with the 68bthp through the 80eldm for my target and steel banging. Varmints get the VMax.

Should I crimp them or not crimp them?
AR, accuracy is priority 1.

Myself, I found my AR accuracy suffering. It dawned on me when I ejected a live round and put it back in the magazine, that it had grown. I started crimping my AR ammo and it came alive. The inertia was unseating the bullet when the bolt slammed home causing varying distance from the lands. My gun went from over MOA to about 1/2 MOA. Maybe some brass brands have thicker necks and more tension, but with the surplus Lake City I use, it helped me to crimp.

What chamber are you using?

Hmmm. If I've got it right, KD4 is the name of the upper - not the chamber.
In the description of the upper they mention being designed for 77 gr 556 ammo => sounds like it's a 556 nato chamber.
If so, a mag length SMK 77 is going to jump 40/1000's in a new barrel => I'm thinking the change in group sizes you found were not from a difference of a couple thousandth in seating depth.

I was just thinking - Sierra was making good consistent bullets long before Hornady entered the "good bullet" game. 30 years ago I didn't even consider giving Hornady a try. So why change?
