Hornady 75 Grain ELD Match Load

Want to try some Hornady 75 grain ELD Match bullets in my Rock River AR X-1 Series 223/556 rifle. It has an 18” barrel with 1x8 twist and I want to use these in the magazine. I read someplace that Hornady’s 73 grain ELD match works better in the magazine as the 75’s work best when loaded longer than the magazine will allow. Thoughts appreciated on this.

Thanks

I'm Thinking the 75eld is like the 75amax; they don't just work better when seated long, bullet shape means they must be seated long. 2.390" if I recall. Seated less and the bullet bearing surface is below the open case mouth.

Hornady flat out says in there manual do not use 75 eldm in a service rifle. I have a friend that would not listen. Mid level powder charge and split 4 cases before he would listen and stop using them. They would be okay if you single feed and seat closer to lands, but at mag length you are asking for trouble. I use the 75gr bthp that was designed for AR platform and works well. Hornady does say the 73 eldm will work also.

Not sure if they've changed the 73s. But I tried some when they first came out and they were HORRIBLE.

We couldn't believe how poorly they grouped. It was like 55gr FMJ levels of accuracy.

james, I have no idea how the Hornady 75gr ELD-M would shoot in a AR, but they shoot very well in my 22-243 Imp with a Krieger 7.7 twist. One of the most accurate rounds I've had in many years. I've shot several "ought" groups at a 100 yds with this set-up and it will stay around 4" or better at a 1000 yds. Have taken PD's to 1200 yds. You must seat it long for best results though (see picture). Mine is built on a single shot Panda. Like others have said, the 73 gr would probably work better in a magazine rifle. 7315br

Hello all
Good timing on this subject. Dont remember the dimensions but after checking distance to jam I found out I could not use the needed OAL due to magazine limitation of 2.206. I was and will use the Hornady ELD 73 gr. RR R3 competition 223/556 Wylde chamber. So are you all saying to load to magazine length. If so that will make the jump dim for me at .150 thou.
All thoughts and suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Might be a wee bit to long for a magazine. In my rifle it's a .005" jam. 7315br

They will be ok; check for concentricity at the nose as to load. Or use a jump tolerant bullet like sierra 69 / 77smk, concentricity still matters of course.

If you are shooting XTC, use them at 600. It is single shot and you can leave them long. Use the 68 Hornady or the 69 Sierra for 200 and 300

Hello to all
Was wanting to see what you experts have to say for 223. 80 grain Hornady eld , and H335 powder. 20 in 1/7 twist stainless AR 15 platform.

This will be for testing the end of the month . Have some 73 grain loaded and ready from the earlier posts,
Will be range from 200 yard out to a mile, but we shall see what works, and at what range. Steel targets. Lots of wind.
Will be checking the load data in the latest books, but wanted to see what works for you guys.

Just got e mail from my son on what the agenda is, now I am processing more brass for the trip.

As always Thanks guys

Yes wanted to try something like that , however here in the last few minutes all I found are the 80s in stock.
Figured I could at least test between the two different grains. Same brands and style . Have several loads of H 335 for the 73s.

Thank you.

Like all others stated... the ELDM 75 gr are not for mag length, but the 75 gr BTHP Match are made for mage length and have the same BC as the 73 ELDM.
Just a thought.
If 2 gr difference in bullet weight makes much difference in velocity I can't really say. But I've shot many 75 gr BTHP Match at mag length and they are very accurate bullets.
I think Hornady loads or at least used to load their 75 gr BTHP Match bullets in their Black line of ammo, loaded for mag length.

The 75bthp was my service rifle bullet. Shot it at all distances. Got tired of two bullets and loads for one match and gun. It shot better than I could hold with NMA2 iron sights.
