Hornady 60 gr. sp and IMR 4320 in 22-250!

Hey all, been a while since I've had a question but, this combination seems to be stumping me. Bought a box of Hornady 60 gr. SP and a pound of IMR 4320 and I'm trying to work up a load in my 26", 9 twist 22-250. Tried a ladder test at 100 yds. but, the shots were so close to one another that I couldn't distinguish which charge from one to the next with the hits on the paper. I then tried 3 shot groups starting at 32.5 gr. working up to 34.5 gr. in .5 grain increments and the groups were horrible. Tried a couple 3 shot groups with 31 gr. and 32 gr. also. I'm beginning to think this powder may be a little fast for the 60 gr. bullet. Any help would be appreciated! I went from shooting 55 gr. NBT and Varget to this. Wanted to try a heavier flat base bullet and couldn't find any Varget. Thanks all!

Mike -

Howdy !

I'm inclined to agree with you.

I4320 IS a bit fast for 60's in a 22-250.

You should be running WW760, H414, VV160, I4350; and the like.

Have you tried Sierra 65s, at all ?

RL19 has worked very well for 60's-64's in a std 22-250 for me in every tube I've had, I would venture to guess RL17 would give you even more velocity. Unless you need a hunting bullet give Berger 60's and 64's a try, the 64's will stabilize in a 12 twist no problem and have shot better than any other 60-mid 60 grainer I've tried.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. I wasn't sure if it was something I was doing or if it was the powder or the bullet. I must admit though, these are cheap bullets and I realize you get what you pay for. 357, I'm gonna have to try some of those Sierra 65s along with one of the powders you mentioned or possibly one of the powders GrocMax mentioned. I don't know why but, I have kind of avoided the ball powders. I have used H380 but, was not impressed with its performance. Didn't shoot as well as Varget with the 55 gr. Noslers. Do the low 60s Bergers have good terminal performance on varmints such as woodchucks? If they shoot and perform, I won't mind spendin the extra money. Thanks again guys!

The Bergers tend not to have as much splat factor unless you fling them pretty fast, but if you don't hit them they don't splat anyways.

i find those 60 grain hornady SP bullets to be kinda junk. I have tryed them in my savage 22-250 1:12 twist gun and they grouped badly, with win 760, 748, and imr-4064. I ran them through my AR-15 1:9 today, on benchmark and varget, 1" groups AT BEST, probably more lik 1.3" at 100 yards. i give up on it. squirrels are big enough for them to find a use. ;) i like sierra MK's ALOT. i dont question the bullet as much, more my loading techniques. cheaper bullets kinda just add another variable to it all

Thanks again guys! I think I'm gonna have to agree with NHgunNut, they're kinda junk! I'm gonna try some Bergers or some Sierras and see how they shoot, with a slower powder of course! Thanks once again!
