horizontal stringing

When a gun shoots no vertical but shoots horizontal and increases to the degree of distance, not severe about 1/2 moa. What usually causes it with calm conditions. DG

We saw this with a friend's rifle, an Eliseo Tubegun in .308 win. He was convinced it was something mechanical. Then we had two other shooters shoot the rifle (including me). I had a straight line vertical group (not used to bag squeezing), and the other shooter had a perfectly round group about 1/3 MOA at 100 yards. The horizontal was definitely NOT the rifle.

We took video of the rifle's owner shooting. He was not pulling the trigger straight back. It was very obvious from the video. He worked on his trigger control, and he made High Master this year.

YOUR problems could still be mechanical (even a scope issue). But don't rule out "driver error".

Also many people don't understand the "rule of the square" regarding wind drift. The amount of side-to-side push from the wind goes up with the square of the distance (not precisely, but pretty darn close). So, if the wind pushes your shots 1/2" left or right at 100 yards, it will push them roughly 2" at 200 yards (not 1" as you might guess).

I'm thinking the 'driver error' more than bedding issues. BUT I might be very wrong as both do it to you. Try working on the trigger pull and then the other.

I agree that you need to eliminate the trigger pull possibility but, before you do that, re-torque the action screws so you're certain that your trigger practice isn't in vain.

Had the problem with my 1st 6BR. Targets looked like this.......................
It was caused by too light a load. I was just starting with this cartridge as I said and had quite light loads with the intent of working my way up.
Site members responded to my question and so I increased the amount of powder and watched the horizontal stinging disappear.
So all of the above answers are possibilities but it would be nice to know what you are shooting, is this rifle new to you, is it your handloads, does it do it with factory ammo, etc.,etc.

HORIZONTAL TUNING

"I credit Daryl Loker with enlightening me about the importance of neck tension and seating depth. Several years ago Daryl said to me,

"Tune the horizontal out with neck tension and seating depth and then tune the vertical out with the load."

My experiences in the tunnel have proven Daryl is right. He found that in most cases, the best place to seat the bullet is just barely in contact with the lands but not "sticking" in the lands.

As far as neck tension is concerned, I believe it can only be determined by feel. I use what most would refer to as medium neck tension. Invariably when I seat the bullets on 'jam' I get one to two bullet holes of horizontal; in the tunnel!

With medium neck tension, the bullets are normally forced into the lands about .020 from just touching.

Usually, backing the bullets off 'jam' about .010 to .015 eliminates horizontal.

Once horizontal has been eliminated, neck tension and seating depth should not be changed.

Do all remaining tuning with either the load or a tuner. Gene Beggs"
