Homeowners insurance conflict

I hate to post (my first!) a possible downer, but has anyone had any trouble with their insurance company on the storage of powder and or primers? Recently Erie insurance has been bugging me about my roof , furnace and water heater status. Can't remember if they know I reload. That might be fun! Thanks!

Get a different insurance. I have delt multiple insurance companies over the past 15 years and not a single one has ever said boo to me about a water heater, roof, or boiler. They have never even set foot in my house. Let alone know what i have as far as powder ammo and reloading supplies. Unless you are trying to insure your reloading stuff which I'm not sure they would do, why tell them anything.

Seem like they are a little to into your business to me. Just my opinion. They are not the only fish in the pond. They also may change their tune if you tell them you are leaving.

I don't know why your insurance would be involved with maintenance. That seems strange.

As far as storing powder, I was always under the impression that if you have more than allowed by some standard (NFPA?) then you will not get any money if your house burns down because of it or is further damaged by a fire because of it. I store my powder carefully because of this.

I purchased a certified powder magazine (metal box lined with plywood and painted red) for less than $200. As long as pressure from burning powder can bleed out (as in, do not seal it shut) it is not supposed to contribute any more or less than what ever is already on fire.
Don't forget that your firearms are generally not insured by regular insurance companies (including mine). The NRA Firearm Insurance is about $100 per each $10,000 of protection and there are no questions asked as far as what you own ahead of time. Just a limit that you select.

have they told you why they want that info?

Roof if you're in a Hurricane mitigation area. The rest is internal/external maintenance. Nunya would be my answer.

I spent 30 years in the insurance industry in many different areas. Water is the number one hazard and
dollar loss. Erie is a top rated company. They are trying to help you. I suggest you listen to them.
You would not believe some of the disasters I have seen due to water!

insurance rates are based on AGE OF THE PARTS.
OLD ROOF, HIGHER PREMIUM
OLD WATER HEATER/POSSIBLE WATER DAMAGE.. higher premium
...
as an example after a complete rebuild my ins dropped by half as everything was new.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

I have Farm Bureau of Idaho. My policy covers all that stuff, and I just tell my agent how much replacement coverage in dollars I want on firearms. It's about the same as the NRA, and they do not ask for detailed information RE model numbers, etc. They did ask about the double rifles though.

farm bureau in IN covers my guns except for theft. if you want that coverage you have to give them serial #s and pay extra.

Not fun!

Knowing how insurance companies go for avoiding claims I would take care to not exceed storage limits for various components as listed in the SAAMI site (NFPA). Primers, powders, and nice thick walled wooden boxes. I am sort of a paranoid on this stuff from experiences during a former life. Big red fire extinguishers make me happy.

Check with your local Fire Department. Code varies from county to county.

Be sure to keep the correct type of extinguisher handy where you keep your powder. A dry chemical extinguisher is useless in that setting.

I do know that if fire was aggravated by reload components you'll have a heck of a time . Especially if over the legal max of primers and if any primers are stored with powder and if your powder isn't stored in an approved box /container

Wow! Great insight everybody. Thanks. Erie tells me that to keep their rates low they request this info. Again , a lot of good stuff on my first post!

Your state Fire Marshal's Office (or whatever they call it where you live) probably has a limit far lower than 20-pounds of powder without an external storage magazine. IIRC, the limit was seven (7) pounds in Maryland, at least when I lived there.
