home made rest..

Howdy, for some time I have been thinking of making a Front rest.

One item in particular I would apprecaite your opinion.

and that is, using the Acme screw from a Caldwell Rock rest. would you ? or better alternatives/methods.

thanks

Home made rests are quite easy to make once you have a general idea of what you want to do and of course if you have a lathe. Before i made this i was going to use a caldwell post but in the end i just made my own by turning up a new post in the thread pitch that i chose. As i shoot F-class i wanted a rest that would allow me to remain in position and adjust at the same time, but i cant get on with joystick types, hence the belt drive. If you want to build a rest for bench shooting, then it would be quite straight forward. As i wanted a heavy rest i made mine out of steel but boy did it turn out heavy.
Its not pretty but it does the job, one day i will get round to painting and polishing it.

Good luck

The rest didn't really take too long to build, I bored the main body in a dividing head/ rotary table to set the angle of the legs, then after that it was mainly just a case of simple turning/ milling and thread cutting. I suppose if I added the hours I spent on it together, not much more than a full working day. I expect a pro engineer could quite easily half that. I think the total cost was around $100

If I had to choose a profession again it would be as a machinist. You guys are amazing.

Use the largest and the finest thread you can find or build. Acme is sloppy. The finer threads "work FOR you" if your rifle weight is considered heavy.
