Hogue stock

I have a new Hogue stock----full bedding block-----for a Rem 700 BDL sporter barrel contour.

Any opinions on these stocks ?

I'll need to open the barrel channel for a Kreiger sporter contour. Any ideas in how to remove
the softer material ?

Will appreciate opinions and ideas.

I have two, both for Rem 700's w/ detachable magazines. These stocks were not my first choice but I couldn't find any other stocks to fit the detachable magazine 700's years ago to replace the cheap ineffective Rem factory plastic stocks. Mine are the plain old gray finish.

The following is my assessment after using them for about 10 years hard in the field:

- They are uglier than sin.

- Performance wise I have no complaints - the bedding block seems to work very well providing a solid bed for accurate shooting.

- I like the extra weight and the absorbent recoil pad for heavier calibers - very effective in helping control recoil.

- The pistol grip provides excellent trigger finger access.

- The rubberized surface scratches easily but provides a non-slip surface and does not torque when shooting in my cross sticks. So far mine hasn't begun to peel or degrade to affect function.

Bottom Line - ascetics aside - these stocks are very functional and economical.

Thank you K22. An ugly rifle that shoots pretty is OK with me.

Hopefully I can find out how to deal with the rubber-like barrel channel
without making it any uglier.

I had to open up the barrel channel on mine. I took an 80 grit adhesive disc and stuck it to a piece of 3/4 EMT and used it like a barrel channel rasp. This technique is kinda slow but leaves a neat clean channel. Fit the action regularly and don't over do it. Mine is a truck gun that lives behind the seat of the truck I use for work. Looks were never a consideration, but he barrel channel fits just right.

I used course sand paper wraped around a deep well socket.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think they look great!

I like em. The full bedding block is the only one to consider. I did one for myself years ago and a lot of people want them after seeing one installed

I did one with sandpaper and socket like the other guys mentioned, the sandpaper would plug up fast, so I would run a wire brush over the sandpaper to clean it out.

If you're careful you can use a Dremel. But don't let your wife tap you on the shoulder while you're doing it. Don't ask how I know.

If you are going to sand it, try freezing it first to harden the rubber, re-freeze as needed. Just like installing recoil pads, freezing will make it sand better.
