Hog Hunt 04/15/16

ab_bentley

I fix stuff, sometimes....
Went out this afternoon, got four. First was a measly 84yds. Big old dirty thing, but healthy. She wasn't wet so no babes.

The next up was 485yds. He was a smaller male, nothing exciting about him, although it did take me 4 shots to get him pinned. We were shooting over a deep ravine and the up draft was wreaking havoc on the little 75gr bullets with vertical.

Next was the cake topper, 748yds. Again, over a big hollow. Took 4 rounds to get him dialed in. All three shots were prefect on the vertical, but horizontal was getting blown all over due to the wind following that ravine. Managed a direct center punch, which is/was my aiming point.

The last one was 198yds, drilled him through the center of the shoulders, caught the angel as it was leaving which is a rare sight.

I'm running a 223 with the 75 Amax @ 3050.

Great shooting. That distance with a 223 is very good shooting. Sure is pretty scenery for chuck hunting too. WD

Took my grandson out scouting one of our farms last evening. Saw four along the "always productive" fence row. Ranges from 100 to 300 Yds.
Try as we might neither of us could determine gender or whether the female, if any, were lactating. I wish my eyes were as good as some.
We don't start killing them here until after the young are out and able to fend for themselves. Hopefully there will always be plenty of chucks for my grandson and his sons.

Last night did some quick load development with xbr8208, ended up right at 25gr for a velocity of 3000 on the dot. I have a good client a call and went over to his range which stretches out past 1500yds. I utilized the 850 and 1000yds targets and went 100% on the 1000yd cinder block (8x12) for 6 shots. He was impressed, hell so was I.

I killed my forth hog Thursday night at 10:15 PM with a .308 FNAR at 334 yards with a thermal scope. One shot, dropped in his tracks. Put two more in him to be sure. It was tearing up my pasture. We can use all means in Mo. to kill them.
