Hodgdons 6BR Info

I was looking at the Hodgdons site and their load info page and noticed that BL-C,2) had good volocities with less pressure and was wondering, how this powder act in the heat, say for instance, on a highpower range where there is no relief from direct sunlight. Of course, the ammo would be kept in the shooting cart bag, so it would be shaded there, but that is the only relief from direct sunlight.

28 gr. of Benchmark works well.
Mine is a 30" barrell 1-8 tw.
I have been trying 30 gr. of RE-15 lately and getting good results as well.

BL-C2 is a ball powder. That means it meters well and you can get a lot into the case. But it burns pretty dirty and most shooters feel it won't deliver the accuracy and low ES of an extruded powder.

With the long bullets such as 107 SMK, 105 Berger, 105 Lapua etc., the preferred powders are Varget, H4895, Reloder 15, Norma 203B, Vihtavuori N140, N540, N150... in no particular order.

The vast majority of American match shooters using the 6BR with heavy bullets are using Varget or Reloder 15. Norma 203B, only recently made available, is very, very similar to RL15. Another very good powder worth trying is H4895, but we've found it's best with slightly smaller bullets--the 90s and 95s.

Mod thanks for the info.. but I was just wondering about the BL-C,2).. I know about the other powders and my current load is 30.6 grns of RL-15 with the SIE 107 dry and 30.5 grns of RL-15 with the Berger 108BT dry. Both of my 6BR's like the SIE bullet load.

I use lots of BL-C2 in 308, 30-30 and in 204 Ruger. I did take it upon myself to try Bl-C2 with Berger 105 VLD's in a 6BR and the best groups were about .6MOA at 100M. It took over 31 grains to break 2850 fps. This is a quarter minute gun with Varget and no particular effort.

My conclusion was that it was just not up to Varget or RL-15 and with its well-known reputation for being temperature sensitive, I have more or less given up going further with the experimentation.

I'd also like to hear what others have to say...
