Hodgdon Pyrodex RS ...

Given that finding powder is difficult ...

Just curious what the going rate is on one pound containers of this stuff.

Midway USA lists it for about $18/container ... is this stuff going for a premium as well?

Thanks

One of the few powders that my local Sportsmans Warehouse still has in stock. $20 here. I'm just using the pellets these days.

I went to 777 and never looked back. Cut my teeth on spit patch, round ball, FFFg through a .50 T/C Hawkens. Used to feed it about 45 grains of the stuff. Snuff can groups off hand at 75 yards. I have a buddy that swears by FFFg in the pan and down the tube in a .68 smoothbore that he built. Kinda curious as to how much his horn throws down the hole.

I have not shot black powder in many years. In the mid to late 70's I bought a SS Ruger Old Army 45 cal wheel gun. I did not have any powder yet, so borrowed some Pyrodex. Stuffed as much in the cylinders as possible and still seat the balls. I proceeded to shoot at probably about a 3/8" plate steel. The gun had no kick and only dented the steel. A week later I picked up my triple F black powder. I filled the cylinders the same as with the Pyrodex. This time when I fired it she jumped, snorted a cloud of white smoke, and punched a hole right through the steel plate. I never used another drop of Pyrodex in my black powder guns. I built a couple of 50 cal. TC Hawkens and my wife and myself shot local shoots. We practiced nearly every day. The Hawkens shot well with round balls, patches and tripleF. I had not such good luck with the round balls and whitetail. After some penetration tests in newspaper, I switched to what was at the time called buffalo bullets. Seems like they were in the neighborhood of 350 gr. I put one of those on top of 100 gr. of tripleF for whitetail. When you touched that off it was lethal. I know there are a ton of different powders available now for "black powder" guns and I cannot speak to them as I have no experience with them. As for the original Pyrodex, I will not use it.

My suggestion is to check with other suppliers and see what the going rate is now. I have killed several elk and mule deer with Pyrodex, it worked good for me. When it did not it was not the powders fault.

Pyrodex is redilly available at the local rural king store here. I use it in my Hawken 50 cal flint lock at 90 grains. I us IMR white Hots powder pellets in front of a 285 g bullet in my buckhorn. 150 Grains of powder man does it shoot . When the smoke clears its cool. I shot a coyote with it at 75 yards last deer season . What a mess!!
