High Heat spray paint on AR BBL?

Go ahead + laugh :)

I have in the past done my own cerakoting with great success, and enjoyed it, but
that shop is history...oven, compressor, air guns, blast cage, etc...

I was wondering why a can of matte black high heat krylon auto paint wouldn't work
to spray a bead blasted AR bbl?

Anyone ever try it?

thx,

I've used just plain old regular Krylon with good results. Unless you plan to get the barrel hot enough to grill bacon, you shouldn't need the high-temp stuff.

Go to a local speed shop get a can of VHT paint. It is used to paint the headers on a race car. 2400 deg. paint.. Tommy Mc

I used Rustoleum High Temp enamel paint on a stainless AR barrel almost 3 years ago. It is a flat black and really looks good. That AR gets put on tractors and is in and out of pickups almost daily. It has one spot where I hit it on something metal.

You can use duracoat without a compressor and oven. I duracoated black my Noveske 18" barrel several years ago and it still looks new.

I painted my son's .223 (not an AR) with rattle can camo paint from Lowes. Has been on the rifle for nearly ten years. When he was working on a deer/quail ranch in south Texas he carried this gun in his truck or on the tractor pretty much daily. Still holding up well. Used three colors, used leaves and grass for the pattern, turned out very nice.

I did my Ar10 upper with Alumahyde from Brownells. And the "matte black" matches the typical AR15 finish perfectly. That being said, I'm not sure that the high heat Krylon (header paint) wouldn't do exactly the same job just as well. I like the Brownells stuff, but it clogs the can if you let it sit around... and I really don't think it is much different than plain old Krylon.

The trick i think is to use citris strip on it first to get every bit of oil out of the metal. Then wash it with hot water and Dawn. Then spray it down with carb cleaner, then paint. And it sticks like mad.

great info, gents! I have some Brownells TCE still on hand for prep.

carb cleaner - same product?
bbl is bead blasted so has good tooth already...

I cerrakote my own. Sprayer, and a simple counter top oven to bake it. Now I can only go out to about 16 inches to fit the oven.
