Here we go again

So, last night I decided to buy an 8lb jug of Varget. So I checked around to find the best price on it. Well, everyone has the same price. $0.00. Yup, it's out of stock again. Tried Powder Valley, Midway, Midsouth, Graf's, and Third Gen. Sure hope this is not a sign of things to come. (again)

It's not like I am out of it, I have a good bit. I also have RL15, 4895, 4064 ect. It just makes you wonder about these guys. They always seem to be short on one type of popular powder. It was 4350 for a while, now it is everywhere. Now it looks like Varget is going to be the next shortage. With any luck it won't be long before they get in another shipment.

As for N140, I have wanted to try it but no one local has any in stock, and I don't want to order a bunch of it just to try. I may add a couple lbs. to my next order. Is it true that it does not store well?

There is no truth to any rumor about storage issues with VV propellants. However, there have been posts here stating "early" degradation of some numbers in that brand. All brands suffer going bad symptoms "early" sometimes due to numerous causes. What is considered normal shelf life?

VV states this on their website: "The estimated shelf-life of Vihtavuori gun powders is a minimum of 10 years, if stored and sealed in its original containers at a temperature of circa 20°C and relative humidity of 55-65 %."

I did lose some N140 two years ago manufactured in 1999. One was a half full 2lb. can and the other was an unopened 2lb. plastic can, same lot#. They had the typical nose stinging chlorine like acid smell with red dust present. The plastic containers were brittle and broke apart when flattened for the trash can. I got them very cheap, no loss.

I found Varget at 2 different places in Tenn 2 weeks ago. Cabelas in Raleigh hasn’t had any the last 2 times I was there. Said they get a couple of pounds put it on the shelf and it is gone before the end of the day. Had plenty oh h4350. Go figure

I had vihtavuori, imr, winchester, accurate and hodgdon go bad at the exact same time. All were years apart in age so no common denominator

I will send you my leftover varget powder, i have it stored in a 8lb red dot can. I lost the original container somewhere.

Thanks, but I have quite a bit on hand, along with a whole lot of other powders. I just found it odd that so many big dealers were out of it.

I spoke with a dealer this morning who says it's not a supply issue, it's a shipping issue. Hodgdon comes out of Australia. The dock workers are slowing down the shipping. Hodgdon has told its suppliers it expects to get everything up and on schedule within a week.

I've got my fingers crossed.....

I've been using 8 yr old VV powder (sealed 1 lb) recently & it is in perfect condition. 550, 133, 135 140- all good.

My LGS has both 1# and 8# in stock. But the pricing is ridiculous, $33.95 for 1# & $238.95 for 8#. They don't ship powders nor primers. But their pricing, may be why it's still in stock.
