Here are the components--What should I chamber it in?

Here are the components I have:

--- 308 Krieger 17 twist LV barrel
--- Sako (pre Garcia) magnum action (was originally a 7mm Rem mag)
--- The original Sako stock and rings.

What should I have it chambered in? I am leaning towards a 300 Win mag. and load 110, 120, 125 grain bullets. I have considered a 300 WSM, but there would be a large space in the long magazine.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,
Gene Pool

17 twist? why? is it gonna be a varmint rifle? you are REALLY restricting your bullet selection with that twist. 1 in 12 will shoot the 125s to 180s and some 200s just fine. Don't understand why you would limit yourself with a 1 in 17?

7mm Remington Magnum necked up to .308. Wouldnt be as overbore as 300 WM and still fill up magazine.

Im kinda like you, pretty particular about how cartridges fit in mags.

300 WSM, ignore the magazine length, it shouldn't be an issue. 17 twist might be slow, but it will be fast. I have run 125grs at over 3800 in mine (12 twist)

Put me down for the 308 Norma also. I tend to agree with the comments on the slow twist but that's cuz I shoot heavies exclusively. That being said it would be really fun to see the results on a p dog!

Sell the 17 twist barrel to someone that wants to build a 30br or 30x44. Then you can build whatever you want without restrictions.

Looks fun, but wow the nice barrel and cost of a gunsmith for chambering would get expensive for only 500 rounds of use. Ouch

If 400 of those rounds produce similar results to that, it's a worthwhile investment in my opinion but ymmv.

I have both hogs and coyotes on my place that I plan on using it for. Some distances are out to 750 yards, but most are 200 and under. Lots of calibers would "kill" them, but this project looks like a boat load of fun.

Thanks,
Gene
