Herco in 357 Mag

Was given a pound of Herco and was wondering if it can be used in 357 mag with 125gr plated Extreme bullets. I can not find any loads anywhere. Thanks for the help.

Slower than Unique and faster than 2400. Probably work better with 158s near full power load. Worst case with a 125 you can't crimp, may not give complete burn. Some one will be along shortly with an older Lyman manual with some actual data. Lost my old Lyman during my last move!

In a really old Sierra book: Jacketed 125 gr bullet, start at 9.6 grains of Herco for 1200 fps.

My 44th Edition Lyman handbook lists beginning load of 7.0 grains Herco with a 121 grain bullet #258242 of #2 alloy. It lists the same beginning load with a 141 grain cast bullet #358495. I have no idea how a plated bullet acts vs a non plated lead bullet. Lyman gives NO Herco data with jacketed bullets !!!!!!

My advice, just stick with Unique or 2400.

One thing about Herco, is that you can safely use Unique data for it. Velocities will be slightly less at the same charge weights, as it is slightly slower burning than Unique. I use Herco quite a bit.

Attached is the data from a Hercules pamphlet I have.
