Helping wife get into matches -- Questions

Folks,

I am getting my wife to start getting more active in shooting competitively, can anyone tell me if there are any simple reads, videos or such to show her how to learn to set up at a bench on her own? How to set up her scope for any range she will shoot at? Mostly the basics. I try, but sometimes with my patience level and her ability to question me to death, we hit road blocks and it frustrates both of us. She has serious potential to be able to compete and I want her to be a success, and have fun at the same time. We will be shooting various yardages, mostly off a bench, she is shooting a light .260 AI in a BAT repeater, with a NF NXS compact scope. When the time comes, I will outfit her to shoot long range BR with me as well.

Thanks Folks.

My wife doesn't shoot, but if she did, I would patiently answer every question she asked. She is the write down type, so I would encourage her to write down and make a glossary of terms we use so much that don't make much sense to a new or non shooter. And make a set up check list and a scope cheat sheet in a notebook.

As tough as it may be, it might require someone else to teach her at the range. It depends entirely on the dynamic of communication between you and her, if it gets sparky quick, might be best to find someone else to help her along with the basics, until you can come back and work on fine tune without sounding condescending, even if you aren't trying to be. Just how some relationships work out.

I f she has the desire and is competitive she will learn. If your wiring she will, it won't happen. What matches are you looking at for her. If it's Ridgeway VBR you might start her off being a spotter, worth their price in gold, a good one. Next thing get the 260AI barrel off and start her with a 6br.

Howdy !

Careful what you wish for. Within many shooting disciplines, the situation has oft been encountered where a novice wife waxed her husband's _ _ _ right out of the gate !

I sometimes think this is do to a pure, honest desire to learn refined... un-adulteraed techniques.... couple w/ the ability to apply them. The wife comes in having no existing bad shooting habits, and learns / successfully applies only good techniques and methods. This of course assumes good teachers, which is where you come in. Just MHO....

Great ideas, thank you

Thank you, this is her hunting rifle, I fully plan on moving her into a 6br of some kind. This rifle she is shooting is a perfect rig to get her started on. It has a good break, good stock, and trigger, in a BAT Hr action. She is comfy shooting it, and does well. There is just a gap of getting set up, understanding scope come ups, switches and parallax.

Provide the basics...at least, as much as either of you can stand without repercussions. ;)

Then send her here to Accurate Shooter to ask questions. Forum members will be happy to help her without any concern for repercussions. Once she starts beating you regularly at matches, don't forget this was your idea, so no repercussions going the other direction. ;););)

If I was going to do this with my wife, I would use a number of suggestions already given.

What I would also do is ask someone who I know at the range to provide some additional instruction and attention. Wives will often accept guidance and instruction from others more readily than with their husbands. And then when they learn something new they can brag about it as if we didn't know it before they told us.

Maybe I'm alone in experiencing this.

I'd eventually get her reloading as well. The pride they would take knowing they put together the rounds that printed a nice target makes a lasting impression.
Thank you. She does help with the reloading, she will be helping more as she gets time

I was really impressed with Sally Bauer’s performance at The Tack Driver 11 last November.

I would be interested in how her and Jim work together.
