Helpful Hint -- Good Deal on Muffs

For a while I needed a new pair of ear muffs for rifle shooting but all the choices gave me a headache to I put it off. Finally I took the plunge and purchased a set of Walker Razor muffs from Midway. At $20 I figured my down size risk was low.

Took them to the range today and I was very pleased. They are low profile and do not interfere with cheek weld which was my primarily issue. They're compact and fold nicely into my range box. The have a NRR Rating of 27 DB but I also use foam plugs in addition to the muffs trying to save what little hearing I have remaining.

There is a preponderance of muzzle brake guys at the range shooting magnum rifles - these muff seem to help over my old ones.

If you have passive muffs (non-amplified), a half bag or so of cotton balls stuffed in each earpiece greatly helps attenuation. It would help with amplified as well, but will cut down on the amplification.

27 NRR is quite good for thinner profile muffs.

Here are the Walker Razors on Amazon:

We do recommend double coverage (plugs and muffs) when possible. Depending on the equipment, and how you measure, audio engineers say "doubling up" can enhance Noise reduction by about 5-6 dB. But considering that dB is a logarithmic scale, 5 dB is significant.

I use foam plugs and Clark muffs on a covered range. If I happen to leave one plug out because I was talking to someone earlier I notice its absence on the first shot.

I have these Walker muffs. After about a year of use the padded part went flat, and now they hurt my ears. Anybody else notice this? DJB
